Is therapy covered by provincial healthcare plans in Canada?Browse all therapists
Some therapy services are covered by the government through provincial healthcare, like the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), or Medical Services Plan (MSP) in British Columbia.
Generally speaking, if someone enters the mental health care system through a hospital visit, treatment is covered. Visiting a psychiatrist via a doctor’s referral for a prescription will also be covered, but most psychiatrists won’t offer counselling, therapy or psychotherapy.
Otherwise, you can expect to pay out-of-pocket or to rely on your workplace benefits to offset therapy costs.
