What is ADHD therapy?
Many adults in Toronto look for ADHD therapy after years of missed deadlines, lost items and projects that stall near the finish line. Therapy gives those patterns a structure to work on.
ADHD stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. CAMH calls it highly treatable and says psychoeducation is the first step in treatment.
For therapy itself, CAMH states that psychotherapy is critical. It says one-on-one cognitive-behavioural therapy can help people reframe negative situations. It also lists lifestyle management, including sleep, clutter and exercise, as part of care.
First Session lists therapists based in Toronto, plus therapists elsewhere in Canada who are insured to provide online care in Ontario. Each profile has a short intro video and a written bio, so you can find someone who lists ADHD as an area of experience.
What to know about ADHD therapy in Toronto
Online and in-person
ADHD therapy is built on conversation, planning and skills practice. That format can be delivered by video or in a room.
Extended health plans reimburse online sessions on the same terms as in-person sessions. Your therapist must be registered in Ontario, including therapists based in other provinces who are insured to provide online care here.
Credentials in Ontario
The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) regulates psychotherapy under the Psychotherapy Act, 2007, and "Registered Psychotherapist" is a protected title. An RP (Qualifying) practises psychotherapy under clinical supervision while finishing registration requirements.
The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers protects the title "registered social worker." Since December 30, 2017, its registrants can perform psychotherapy.
Cost and insurance
GreenShield, a benefits insurer, lists per-session ranges across Canada: $120 to $200 for social workers, $120 to $250 for registered psychotherapists and $200 to $400 for psychologists. It adds that rates tend to be higher in larger urban centres.
OHIP covers therapy delivered by a medical doctor. Private therapists are an out-of-pocket cost unless workplace benefits pay for them.
Diagnosis and assessment
In Ontario, communicating a psychological diagnosis is restricted to qualified members of the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. CAMH notes that ADHD treatment often takes place in primary care settings.
A diagnosis helps if medication or formal documentation is the goal. It can also help someone make sense of what they have experienced.
How to choose an ADHD therapist in Toronto
1Look for ADHD in the bio, then check the training
Filter by specialty and read each bio for ADHD experience and the approaches the therapist uses, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy. The designation on every First Session profile lets you match it to your benefits plan before you book.
2Watch the intro video
A bio lists training. A video shows how a therapist explains ideas and sets the pace of a conversation. First Session profiles include a short intro video so you can judge that before booking.
3Use the free 15-minute consultation
Ask how the therapist structures sessions and what they would work on first, such as late starts or unfinished tasks. You can book the free consultation directly from the profile.
4Ask about your situation
CAMH notes that some patients do not want to disclose ADHD to an employer. If work is part of your concern, ask whether the therapist has supported clients with decisions like that.
