What is ADHD therapy?

ADHD therapy gives you a supportive space to build strategies for attention, impulsivity and emotional regulation. It can also help with related concerns such as anxiety, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties.

A 2022 systematic review by the CADDRA Guidelines Work Group, published in Brain Sciences, concluded that the evidence supports a recommendation for cognitive behavioural therapy for adults. For most other psychosocial approaches, it found that only a weak recommendation could be made.

You can start with or without a formal diagnosis. A bio lists training and says little about pace. A short intro video on a First Session profile fills that gap, and the free 15-minute consultation lets you test the fit.

What to know about ADHD therapy in Mississauga

Online and in-person

Mississauga residents can see a therapist in person or online, and the listings above show who offers which. The online section includes therapists based elsewhere in Canada who are insured to provide care in Ontario.

Online sessions remove the commute, and direct booking lets you pick a slot that fits your week.

Credentials in Ontario

Ontario regulates psychotherapy. The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario protects the title "Registered Psychotherapist." The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers protects "social worker" and "registered social worker."

The College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario regulates psychologists and psychological associates.

Cost and insurance

Therapy in Mississauga costs $110 to $220 per session, according to First Session's Mississauga page. The fee shows on each profile before you book, and you receive a receipt for your plan.

OHIP covers care from a family doctor or psychiatrist but does not cover private-practice psychotherapists, psychologists or social workers. Workplace benefit plans may cover private care.

Languages in Mississauga

In the 2021 census figures reported by Settlement.Org, Urdu (35,995) and Arabic (33,263) are the most common mother tongues after English. You can filter by language, and each profile lists the languages offered.

How to choose an ADHD therapist in Mississauga

1Look for ADHD as a named focus area

Use the ADHD filter, then read the bio for the approach. Some therapists describe CBT-based work, and others describe coaching that centres on routines, time management and organization.

2Ask how sessions are structured

Ask whether the therapist sets one or two tasks per session, sends a written summary, or uses reminders between appointments.

3Watch the intro video

The video shows pace and tone. Notice whether the therapist's speaking style helps you stay with the conversation.

4Use the free consultation

In the 15-minute call, ask about the therapist's experience with adults who have ADHD. Ask how they handle a missed or rescheduled session.

5Match the designation to your plan

Plans may name designations such as RP, RSW or psychologist. The designation shows on each profile, so you can compare it with your benefits booklet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to see an ADHD therapist in Mississauga?

No. First Session's ADHD page says therapy suits people with a formal diagnosis and people exploring whether ADHD might be affecting them.

A diagnosis can be made by a physician, psychiatrist or psychologist knowledgeable about ADHD, according to CADDAC. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, so medication goes through a physician or psychiatrist.

What is the difference between ADHD therapy and ADHD coaching?

First Session describes ADHD coaching as a collaborative, action-oriented approach that builds practical skills such as time management, organization and goal achievement.

Therapy gives you a space to develop strategies for attention, impulsivity and emotional regulation, and to work on related concerns like anxiety. Check each bio to see which approach a therapist offers.

Does CBT help adults with ADHD?

It can. The CADDRA Guidelines Work Group's 2022 review concluded that the evidence supports a recommendation for CBT for adults, with moderate confidence in its efficacy.

Ask in your free consultation how the therapist adapts CBT for ADHD, for example with planners, reminders and short tasks.

Does ADHD therapy work online?

Videoconference CBT has early support. A 2025 randomized trial in Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics followed 30 medication-treated adults. Twelve sessions of video CBT plus usual treatment reduced assessor-rated ADHD symptoms more than usual treatment alone.

With 30 participants, it is a small study. The online section above lists therapists insured to provide care in Ontario.

What does RP (Qualifying) mean on a therapist's profile?

It is a College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario category for people who have not yet met all requirements for full registration. These therapists must practise psychotherapy with clinical supervision.

To become an RP, they complete 450 direct client contact hours, 100 supervision hours and the registration exam, within five years of receiving the Qualifying certificate.

Will my plan cover a registered social worker or a registered psychotherapist for ADHD?

It depends on which designations your plan names. The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers says its registrants may perform psychotherapy and call themselves psychotherapists, subject to conditions. A social worker can therefore offer talk therapy too.

Check your benefits booklet for psychotherapy, counselling or psychological services, and note the designations listed.

Is there publicly funded mental health care in Mississauga?

A Peel community listing for Trillium Health Partners describes assessment, treatment and consultation services in Mississauga for ages 16 and up, covered by OHIP. Physicians refer patients through the One-Link form.

The listing does not mention ADHD, so confirm with your doctor what applies to you.
