“I wish I’d known about this platform sooner! I loved the introductory videos–this is what helped me choose the therapist to book an intro consultation with.”

First Session Client, 2025

Helping Every Therapy Seeker Find the Right Fit

Compatibility is the most important factor when choosing a therapist. But finding the right fit isn’t easy. First Session takes the time, guesswork, and emotional labour out of that process.

  • Search a curated therapist network

Narrow your search to a list of rigorously vetted therapists you’ll actually consider booking. Because finding a therapist shouldn’t involve reading endless generic bios.

  • Assess for fit before you commit

Decide if a therapist is the right fit for you before booking with interview videos and in-depth bios. No more switching or re-telling your private feelings and story

  • Book directly (and instantly)

Schedule an available session or free consultation right from the First Session platform. No 3rd party intake calls or back and forth emailing required.

Free yourself from the stress of endless searching and switching

Convenience-first approach to finding a Sunlife

  • Burnout from endless search results and unhelpful Sunlife profiles.
  • Disappointment and frustration from generic intake calls and unproductive ‘free’ consultations.
  • Emotional stress from repeatedly revealing private thoughts and feelings to incompatible Sunlifes
  • Stalled mental health progress because of limited availability, timezone differences, or constantly switching providers
  • Risk of abandoning therapy process altogether because of frustration, exhaustion, or depression

Connection-first approach to finding a Sunlife with First Session

  • Instantly create a short-list of Sunlifes qualified to support your journey
  • Get to know a Sunlife’s personality, approach, and experience before booking
  • Share your private history, thoughts, and feelings only if there’s a connection
  • Save time and minimize stress by finding the right fit without endless switching
  • Make meaningful progress sooner and commit to lasting, meaningful change

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sun Life cover therapy in Calgary?

Usually, but the details depend entirely on your specific plan. Sun Life plans commonly reimburse psychologists, and many also cover registered social workers or counselling therapists.

Check your plan booklet or the Sun Life member site for your exact designation list and yearly maximum before booking.

Do I need a doctor's referral to use my Sun Life benefits?

Some plans require it, and many don't. It depends on how your specific plan is written, not on the therapist's designation.

Confirm this with HR or the Sun Life app before your first session so a claim isn't denied over a missing referral.

Is online therapy reimbursed the same as in-person under Sun Life?

Generally, yes. Extended health plans, including Sun Life, typically reimburse live video sessions on the same terms as in-person visits.

That matters in Calgary because it opens up therapists registered anywhere in Alberta, including ones based in other provinces and insured to work with Alberta clients online.

What's the difference between a psychologist and a counselling therapist for insurance purposes?

Psychologists are regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists and are covered on nearly every Sun Life plan. Counselling therapists (RPC, CCC) are currently credentialed through professional associations, and coverage for that designation depends more on your specific plan.

Check your plan's designation list either way before booking.

How much does a session cost in Calgary if I have to pay upfront?

Registered social workers and counselling therapists often run $50 to $150 per session; psychologists are usually $200 to $350. Most people pay upfront and submit a receipt for reimbursement unless the therapist offers direct billing.

Every First Session profile lists the fee before you book, so there's no surprise on the invoice.

Can an out-of-province therapist still work with my Sun Life plan if I live in Calgary?

Yes, as long as they're registered to practice in Alberta, which First Session verifies before listing anyone. Sun Life reimburses based on the therapist's designation and your plan, not on which province the therapist is physically located in.

The online therapist pool on this page is exactly that group.
