What is a Registered Psychotherapist?
A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is a regulated psychotherapy professional in Ontario. The title is protected and overseen by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), which sets requirements for education, supervised clinical experience, registration, and ongoing professional practice.
Full RP registration requires master’s-level education in psychotherapy, supervised clinical experience, and a registration exam. You may also see Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), which means the therapist is completing supervised clinical requirements toward full registration. Both are legitimate CRPO registration categories.
RPs work with concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, grief, and life transitions. Depending on their training, they may use approaches such as CBT, EMDR, or psychodynamic therapy.
What to know about Registered Psychotherapists in Oshawa
Online and in-person
Oshawa residents can choose between in-person and online therapy. For people who commute to Toronto along the Lakeshore East GO line, online therapy can make it easier to fit a session into the day without adding another trip. It can also give you access to more therapists, which may mean more options for evening availability. Many concerns RPs treat, including anxiety, depression, and relationship issues, can be addressed online. Extended health plans usually reimburse both formats the same way.
Credentials and scope of practice
Registered Psychotherapist is a protected title in Ontario. RPs registered with the CRPO are qualified to provide psychotherapy within their scope of practice. RP (Qualifying) practitioners are also registered with the CRPO and practise under clinical supervision while completing the requirements for full registration. The CRPO requires Qualifying members to complete supervised clinical experience as part of the registration process.
RPs provide psychotherapy, but they do not prescribe medication, conduct psychological assessments or diagnose. For that, you'll need to connect with a different mental health professional, like a psychiatrist and/or psychologist.
Cost and insurance
Therapy with an RP in private practice is not covered by OHIP. Some publicly funded mental health services are available through hospitals and community programs, but private psychotherapy is generally paid out of pocket or through extended health benefits.
Many employer and student insurance plans include Registered Psychotherapists as eligible providers, although coverage varies by plan. Check your benefits for the eligible provider types, reimbursement percentage, annual maximum, and any per-session limits before booking.
In Oshawa, a private RP session commonly costs around $120 to $250, although fees vary by therapist, experience, and session length. First Session profiles show the therapist's fee upfront, and therapists provide receipts that you can use when submitting an eligible claim to your insurer.
How to choose a Registered Psychotherapist in Oshawa
Start with what you want help with
Every therapist has different focus areas and specializations. Start by thinking about what you'd like support with, whether that's anxiety, depression, relationships, trauma, stress, ADHD, or something else. On First Session, you can filter therapists by their areas of focus to narrow down your options.
Pick a format that works for you
Both online and in-person therapy can be effective. The right format ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and what works best for your circumstances. First Session currently features online therapists for clients in Oshawa, giving you access to therapists from across Ontario.
Watch the intro video
Every First Session therapist has a short intro video on their profile, so you can get a sense of their personality and communication style before booking. Watching a few videos can help you narrow down the therapists you feel like you can work with.
Use the free consultation
Every First Session therapist offers a free 15-minute consultation. It's an opportunity to share what brings you to therapy, ask any questions you may have, and get a sense of whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you. Booking a consultation doesn't commit you to ongoing sessions.
