Finding a Therapist in Ajax
Ajax sits in Durham Region, about 11 kilometres east of Toronto, and is connected to the city by GO Transit’s Lakeshore East line. Finding a therapist here means choosing between local in-person options and the much larger pool of Ontario-registered therapists who work online.
OHIP generally does not cover private-practice therapy with psychologists, psychotherapists, or social workers. Publicly funded mental health care may be available through physicians, psychiatrists, Family Health Teams, and other publicly funded programs, but many Ajax residents access private therapy through their own funds, workplace benefits, or extended health plans.
Ajax is also a diverse GTA community, with large South Asian, Black, and Filipino communities and Tamil-, Urdu-, and Hindi-speaking populations. Matching on language, cultural background, or lived experience can be a useful filter when you're looking for a therapist you feel comfortable with.
Because a bio alone doesn't always show how someone communicates, every First Session profile includes a short intro video. Watching a few before booking can help you get a better sense of a therapist's communication style, whether you're looking for local or online therapy.
What to Know About Therapy in Ajax
Online and In-Person
You can see an Ontario-registered therapist online from Ajax, even if they don't practise in your immediate area. Depending on the therapist's registration and professional liability coverage, therapists from outside Ajax may also be able to provide virtual care to clients in Ontario.
Online and in-person therapy can both be options, but your extended health plan may have its own rules about eligible providers and coverage. Check your plan before booking rather than assuming online and in-person sessions are reimbursed identically.
Credentials in Ontario
Many therapists in Ontario hold one of three designations: Registered Psychotherapist (RP) through the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), Registered Social Worker (RSW) through the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), or Registered Psychologist through the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
An RP (Qualifying) is registered with the CRPO while completing the requirements for full registration. This includes completing 450 hours of direct client contact and 100 hours of clinical supervision. First Session verifies each therapist's credentials at onboarding and displays their specific designation on their profile.
Cost and Insurance
Therapist fees vary depending on the therapist's designation, experience, and other factors. In Ajax, private therapy commonly falls somewhere in the $100–$250 range per session, with some therapists charging outside this range. Psychologists often charge more than RPs and RSWs, although there is considerable variation.
OHIP generally doesn't cover private-practice therapy. If you have workplace or extended health benefits, check which mental health professionals your plan covers and whether there is a per-session or annual maximum. First Session profiles list fees upfront, and therapists provide receipts that you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement.
How to Choose a Therapist in Ajax
Start with what you want help with
Every therapist has different focus areas and specializations. Start by thinking about what you'd like support with, whether that's anxiety, depression, relationships, trauma, stress, ADHD, or something else. On First Session, you can filter therapists by their areas of focus to narrow down your options.
Pick a format that works for you
Both online and in-person therapy can be effective. The right format ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and what works best for your circumstances. First Session currently features online therapists for clients in Ajax, giving you access to therapists from across Ontario.
Consider language and cultural fit
Ajax has large South Asian, Black, and Filipino communities, along with Tamil-, Urdu-, and Hindi-speaking populations. First Session lets you filter by language, identity, and lived experience, which can help you find a therapist who understands the cultural or personal context you want to bring into therapy.
Watch the intro video
Every First Session therapist has a short intro video on their profile, so you can get a sense of their personality and communication style before booking. Watching a few videos can help you narrow down the therapists you feel like you can work with.
Use the free consultation
Every First Session therapist offers a free 15-minute consultation. It's an opportunity to share what brings you to therapy, ask any questions you may have, and get a sense of whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you. Booking a consultation doesn't commit you to ongoing sessions.
