What is somatic therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to mental health that works with the physical sensations, movements, and physiological patterns that arise alongside emotional and psychological experiences. Where traditional talk therapy focuses primarily on thoughts and feelings, somatic approaches recognize that the body stores and expresses distress - and that healing often requires working with both.
Common somatic approaches include Somatic Experiencing (SE), EMDR (which incorporates bilateral stimulation), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, body-centred parts work, breathwork, and nervous system regulation techniques. Therapists may incorporate somatic elements alongside other approaches like IFS, trauma-informed CBT, or attachment-based therapy.
Somatic therapy is particularly well-suited for trauma, PTSD, chronic stress, dissociation, anxiety with strong physical symptoms, burnout, and people who feel they've talked about their experiences but haven't felt lasting change. It is also used in grief work, eating disorder recovery, chronic pain, and body image concerns.
What to know about somatic therapy in Ontario
In-person and online somatic therapy
Some somatic work is more easily done in person, particularly approaches that involve physical movement, touch, or breath-based practices. However, many somatic approaches adapt well to online sessions, including Somatic Experiencing, nervous system regulation work, body scans, and parts work. If in-person is important for your specific needs, confirm this with the therapist in the free consultation.
Ontario credentials for somatic therapists
Somatic therapy is an approach, not a regulated designation. Any licensed therapist may integrate somatic work. Common designations in Ontario:
- Registered Psychotherapist (RP) - regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
- Registered Social Worker (RSW) - regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
- Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) - working toward full RP status under supervision
Additional somatic-specific training (e.g. Somatic Experiencing Practitioner certification) is a plus. First Session features therapists' certifications on their profiles, so you can easily check whether they have specific somatic training. You can also ask the therapist about it during your free initial consultation.
Does insurance cover somatic therapy?
Insurance coverage is based on the therapist's designation, not their therapeutic approach. Most Ontario employer and private benefit plans cover Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers, regardless of the modalities they use. Check your plan directly. All First Session therapists provide receipts for reimbursement.
How to choose a somatic therapist in Ontario
1. What somatic approach do they use?
Somatic therapy is an umbrella term. Ask specifically: Are you trained in Somatic Experiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, or another body-based modality? General references to 'somatic awareness' differ from formal somatic training.
2. Do they have experience with your specific concern?
Somatic approaches are used for trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, grief, eating disorders, and more. Check that the therapist's stated specialties match what you're bringing.
3. Is in-person important for your work?
If the somatic work you're seeking involves physical movement, touch, or breath-based practices that are difficult online, confirm that the therapist offers in-person sessions and where they're located.
4. Use the free consultation
Ask: What somatic training do you have? How do you typically integrate body-based work into sessions? What would somatic work look like in my specific situation?
