What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. A GoodTherapy overview describes it as a modality with eight phases, each with its own purpose.
EMDRIA, the EMDR International Association, says bilateral stimulation is delivered through eye movements on a screen or through physical tapping. The World Health Organization's 2013 guidance says referral for advanced treatments such as CBT and EMDR should be considered for people with PTSD.
A bio can list EMDR without showing how deep the training goes. First Session bios describe each therapist's approach and experience, and the modality filter narrows the listings to EMDR.
What to know about EMDR therapy in Greater Sudbury
Online and in-person
EMDRIA's client guide for online sessions advises a private space and a computer or larger tablet. Therapists adapt bilateral stimulation to the screen or use tapping. One low-tech option EMDRIA gives is two sticky notes on either side of the screen, which the client follows with their eyes.
Therapists on First Session are licensed and in good standing with their provincial college. Out-of-province therapists in the second listing are insured to provide online care to Ontario clients.
Credentials in Ontario
According to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), registrants of six Ontario colleges can use the title psychotherapist. These include CRPO, psychologists and social workers.
An RP (Qualifying) practises psychotherapy under clinical supervision, and CRPO allows a maximum of five years to complete the requirements for RP registration.
Cost and insurance
GreenShield lists typical private-pay fees of $120 to $250 for a registered psychotherapist and $200 to $400 for a psychologist. It adds that provincial plans generally do not cover private therapy.
First Session shows fees on each profile and provides receipts for claims.
French-language care
Ontario.ca lists the City of Greater Sudbury as a designated area for provincial services in French. The language filter helps you find therapists who work in French.
How to choose an EMDR therapist in Greater Sudbury
1Ask about EMDRIA training and certification
EMDRIA certification requires approved basic training, a licence to practise independently, two years of experience and at least 50 EMDR sessions with 25 clients. It also requires 20 consultation hours. Ask whether a therapist is certified or has completed training only.
2Ask about preparation and pacing
Ask which coping tools the therapist teaches before processing starts. EMDRIA tells clients they can stop the process at any time, so ask how pausing works in session.
3Match the designation to your benefits
Profiles show whether a therapist is a registered psychotherapist, psychologist or social worker. Compare that wording with your plan before you book.
4Use the intro video and free consultation
Watch the intro video to hear how the therapist explains EMDR. Then use the free 15-minute consultation to ask how they run EMDR sessions online, if you plan to meet by video.
