Finding a therapist in North Bay

North Bay has public mental health services close to home. The Canadian Mental Health Association North Bay and District runs peer support and addiction services. The North Bay Regional Health Centre operates a crisis service around the clock.

Private therapy lets you choose the therapist, the approach and the schedule. In Ontario, the title on a profile shows which regulator oversees that person.

That is a lot to weigh when you are already struggling. First Session profiles include a written bio and a short intro video, so you can hear how someone talks before you book a free 15-minute consultation.

What to know about therapy in North Bay

Online and in-person

North Bay is in the Eastern time zone. The online listings above include therapists from elsewhere in Canada who are insured to provide online therapy in Ontario.

McMaster researchers reviewed 54 trials and found probably little to no difference between therapist-guided CBT delivered remotely and in person, as reported in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The review looked at CBT specifically.

Credentials in Ontario

Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is a protected title held by members of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. RPs complete 450 direct client contact hours and 100 supervision hours before full registration.

Registered social workers are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Psychologists are regulated by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario.

Cost and insurance

GreenShield's 2026 cost guide gives national ranges per session: $120 to $200 for social workers, $120 to $250 for registered psychotherapists and $200 to $400 for psychologists. Fees appear on First Session profiles before you book.

Workplace plans that cover therapy reimburse you after you pay and submit an itemized receipt, according to GreenShield. Coverage depends on the therapist's designation and your plan wording.

Free and crisis options in North Bay

The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program offers free CBT-based care to adults 18 and over with mild to moderate depression or anxiety. Self-referrals are accepted. Call 1-833-496-3677.

For a crisis, call or walk in to the North Bay Regional Health Centre service at 1-800-352-1141, or call 9-8-8.

How to choose a therapist in North Bay

1Start with your concern, then check the designation

Pick a therapist whose bio names your concern, such as anxiety, grief or relationship strain. Then read the designation. First Session lists each therapist's licence and designation, and plans name the designations they cover.

2Watch the intro videos

Tone and pace are hard to judge from a bio alone. Watch two or three videos and notice whose way of explaining things feels easy to follow.

3Use the free consultation to ask direct questions

Book the free 15-minute consultation with your shortlist. Ask how they have worked with your concern, what a typical session looks like, and how you both can tell the work is helping.

4Match the format and time zone to your week

Decide whether you want video, phone or in-person sessions. For a therapist outside Ontario, confirm session times in Eastern Time when you book, since they list hours in their own time zone.

Helping Every Therapy Seeker Find the Right Fit

Compatibility is the most important factor when choosing a therapist. But finding the right fit isn’t easy. First Session takes the time, guesswork, and emotional labour out of that process.

  • Search a curated therapist network

Narrow your search to a list of rigorously vetted therapists you’ll actually consider booking. Because finding a therapist shouldn’t involve reading endless generic bios.

  • Assess for fit before you commit

Decide if a therapist is the right fit for you before booking with interview videos and in-depth bios. No more switching or re-telling your private feelings and story

  • Book directly (and instantly)

Schedule an available session or free consultation right from the First Session platform. No 3rd party intake calls or back and forth emailing required.

Free yourself from the stress of endless searching and switching

Convenience-first approach to finding a therapist

  • Burnout from endless search results and unhelpful therapist profiles.
  • Disappointment and frustration from generic intake calls and unproductive ‘free’ consultations.
  • Emotional stress from repeatedly revealing private thoughts and feelings to incompatible therapists
  • Stalled mental health progress because of limited availability, timezone differences, or constantly switching providers
  • Risk of abandoning therapy process altogether because of frustration, exhaustion, or depression

Connection-first approach to finding a therapist with First Session

  • Instantly create a short-list of therapists qualified to support your journey
  • Get to know a therapist’s personality, approach, and experience before booking
  • Share your private history, thoughts, and feelings only if there’s a connection

  • Make meaningful progress sooner and commit to lasting, meaningful change

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a therapist cost in North Bay?

Therapist fees appear on their profiles. GreenShield's national guide lists $120 to $200 for social workers and $120 to $250 for registered psychotherapists.

Psychologists run higher, at $200 to $400 in the same guide. Compare fees on profiles before booking your free consultation.

Does OHIP cover therapy in North Bay?

Private therapy is generally not covered by provincial health plans such as OHIP, according to GreenShield. Workplace benefit plans that include mental health coverage can reimburse part of the cost.

Psychotherapy and counselling services have been exempt from GST/HST since June 20, 2024, also per GreenShield. Ask your therapist for a receipt after each session.

Is there free therapy in North Bay?

Yes, for some concerns. The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program is free, based on CBT, and open to adults with mild to moderate depression or anxiety. CMHA North Bay and District delivers it locally.

Nipissing University students can book through the Mental Health and Wellbeing office in room B210 or online. If you want a specific approach or a longer course of care, browse the listings above.

Who can call themselves a psychotherapist in Ontario?

Registrants of six regulatory colleges can use the title, according to CRPO. The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario is one of them.

Registered social workers can also use it, with their protected title first, per OCSWSSW. Only CRPO members may use Registered Psychotherapist, so a profile showing RSW or C.Psych follows a different regulator.

Is therapy in French available in North Bay?

The North Bay Regional Health Centre crisis service lists English, French and interpretation services. For ongoing therapy, First Session's language filter narrows the listings by language.

Read the bio for the language each therapist works in, then use the free consultation to test the fit.

Does my benefits plan cover a Registered Psychotherapist?

It depends on how your plan is worded. Plans name covered providers by designation, such as RP, RSW or psychologist, or use a broader label.

Check which designations your plan names before you book. Each profile lists the therapist's designation, and a session receipt should carry it.
