What Is a Canadian Certified Counsellor?
Counselling therapy has no provincial college in Alberta. The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) created the Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) credential in 1986 for provinces like this one.
CCPA says only counsellors it has certified may use the trademarked title. Certification requires a graduate counselling degree, typically a master's, plus supervised clinical experience.
Edmonton counsellors list their own focus areas and approaches on their profiles, from anxiety and grief to relationship concerns.
A designation tells you what training a counsellor completed. A video tells you how they talk with a client. First Session profiles pair the designation with a short intro video and a written bio.
What to know about Canadian Certified Counsellors in Edmonton
Online and in person
Edmonton clients can choose video sessions or in-person visits. The listings above show which counsellors offer each. CCPA is a national association, so counsellors across Canada hold the credential.
From November 2026, Alberta stays on UTC-6 year-round, according to the Government of Alberta. Ask an out-of-province counsellor to confirm session times in Edmonton time.
Credentials in Alberta
CCPA describes certification as designed for unregulated provinces. In September 2026, the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA) reported that Alberta has no protected title for counselling therapy.
The Government of Alberta announced in March 2024 that counsellors would be regulated under the College of Alberta Psychologists, according to CCPA. CCPA provides advice and discipline for its members on professional conduct.
Cost and insurance
GreenShield lists $140 to $225 per session for certified or registered clinical counsellors across Canada. An Edmonton counselling centre, The FamilyCentre, lists a free first session, then $200 per session, with income-based subsidies.
A First Session guide to Blue Cross coverage says CCC is typically an eligible designation. Your plan states which titles it reimburses.
Support in Edmonton right now

How to choose a Canadian Certified Counsellor in Edmonton
1Match the title to your benefits
Plans name the titles they reimburse. Read the provider list in your booklet, then compare it with the designation on each profile. First Session shows the designation on the profile, so you can do this before booking.
2Pick a focus area first
The CCC describes training. The bio describes what the counsellor works on, such as anxiety, grief, or relationships. Use the filters for your concern or approach, then read two or three bios.
3Watch for fit in the video
Notice the pace, the vocabulary, and whether the counsellor sounds like someone you could be honest with. The video is a short sample of how a session might feel.
4Ask practical questions in the consultation
Use the free 15-minute consultation to ask how often they suggest meeting, what the first few sessions cover, and what happens if you cancel. You can book it from the profile.
5Confirm time zones for online care
If you pick a counsellor outside Alberta, ask for session times in Edmonton time. Alberta moves to a year-round UTC-6 clock in November 2026.
