How Canada Life coverage works for therapy in Edmonton
Canada Life reimburses therapy by designation, and your employer's plan decides which designations count. One Canada Life member booklet, for CUPE Local 342, covers out-of-hospital treatment by a registered psychologist or qualified social worker at $300 per plan year each, and names no other counselling provider.
Edmonton adds a wrinkle. According to a 2026 Alberta practice guide, counselling therapy is still unregulated in Alberta, so anyone can use the title counsellor or therapist. The designations with a public register are Registered Social Worker, Registered Psychologist and the national Canadian Certified Counsellor.
Every First Session profile shows the therapist's exact designation, so you can match it to your plan wording before you book a session.
What to know about Canada Life therapy coverage in Edmonton
Online and in-person
A Canada Life claim receipt lists the date of service, the treatment, the charge, and the provider's name, address, telephone number, professional designation and professional association, according to a Canada Life employee kit. Session format is not among those fields.
Edmonton clients can read profiles from two pools: therapists based and insured in Alberta, and out-of-province therapists insured to provide online care in Alberta. First Session shows the designation on both.
Credentials in Alberta
The Alberta College of Social Workers states that only registered social workers can use the protected title of social worker or RSW. The College of Alberta Psychologists registers Registered Psychologists and Registered Provisional Psychologists.
Counselling therapists have no regulator yet. The government announced in March 2024 that the College of Alberta Psychologists would take them on, and a 2026 review reports that regulation is announced but not implemented. Canadian Certified Counsellor is a voluntary national designation from the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.
Cost and insurance
Edmonton Counselling Services lists individual sessions at $235 for 50 minutes. Edmonton's Family Centre lists a $200 standard rate with a free first session and income-based subsidies. According to a 2026 Alberta practice guide, Alberta Health Care does not cover private counselling, so your Canada Life maximum carries the cost.
Annual maximums run from about $2,000 to the $10,000 range depending on the employer, according to First Session's Canada Life guide.
Free public options in Edmonton
Alberta Health Services runs Access 24/7 for adult addiction and mental health programs at 780-424-2424. The Distress Line answers at 780-482-HELP (4357), and 211 connects callers to social and health services.
How to choose a Canada Life therapist in Edmonton
1Read your plan's wording first
Find the paramedical or psychological services line in your Canada Life booklet or GroupNet account. It names the covered designations and the dollar maximum. That line tells you which profiles belong on your shortlist.
2Match the designation to that line
Filter the listings by designation, then compare each one with your plan wording. A Registered Social Worker, a Registered Psychologist and a Canadian Certified Counsellor can all appear in the same results, and your plan may name only some of them.
3Watch the intro video
A designation shows how a therapist is registered, and a short video shows how they talk with a client. Watch two or three before you book.
4Ask about receipts in the free consultation
Canada Life's employee kit lists the provider's designation and association among the receipt details. Ask the therapist to confirm both appear on theirs, and compare the session fee with your remaining annual maximum.
5Ask about direct billing before you book
Some providers can submit claims for you if you give them your plan number and member ID. First Session does not offer direct billing, so plan to pay at the session and upload the emailed receipt to Canada Life.
