What a CCC Means in Saskatchewan

A Canadian Certified Counsellor, or CCC, is a national certification. In most provinces it sits alongside a provincial license. In Saskatchewan, it’s effectively the main credential you can check.

Saskatchewan doesn’t currently regulate counselling or psychotherapy as a profession. There’s no provincial college, and “counsellor” isn’t a protected title here, unlike “social worker,” which is legally protected under the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers.

The CCC is issued by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) to counsellors who hold a master’s degree in counselling or a related field and complete supervised practicum hours. First Session verifies every counsellor’s credentials at onboarding too, which matters more here than in a province with its own college to check.

What to Know About Counselling in Saskatchewan

Online and In-Person

Both formats work for most of what people search for here: anxiety, depression, relationship issues, stress, PTSD. A counsellor seeing Saskatchewan residents, local or online from elsewhere in Canada, needs to be insured to do so. Extended health plans reimburse online counselling on the same terms as in-person sessions.

Credentials in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan has no provincial counselling college, so CCPA, a national professional association, issues and tracks the CCC rather than a government regulator.

Social work is different. “Social worker” is a protected title under the Social Workers Act, enforced by SASW, with real penalties for misuse.

Every First Session profile shows the exact designation, CCC, RSW, or otherwise, so you know which kind of oversight applies before you book.

Cost and Insurance

Private counselling in Saskatchewan typically runs $100 to $200 per session, though rates vary by experience and specialty.

Insurance plans usually name a designation directly, RSW or CCC, rather than covering “counselling” generically. Confirm your plan names CCC specifically before assuming coverage.

Every First Session profile lists its fee before you book, and you'll receive receipts for your claim.

How to Choose a Canadian Certified Counsellor in Saskatchewan

Confirm CCC is what your plan covers

Not every plan reimburses a CCC. Check your benefits booklet for “Canadian Certified Counsellor” or “CCPA” by name before booking, then match it to the designation shown on the profile.

Look past the CCC label to what’s underneath

CCC-holders come from varied backgrounds. Some are also registered social workers, others hold a counselling-specific master’s alone, and the bio says which, which matters for scope and for insurance.

Watch the intro video

A bio lists training. A short video shows tone and manner, which matters more once you’re in session. For that reason, every therapist on this page filmed an unscripted introduction.

Use the free consultation to ask about supervision and experience

Ask directly how long they’ve held the CCC and whether they’ve worked with your specific concern. In a province without a licensing college, this conversation carries more weight than it would elsewhere.

Check the fee before you commit

Rates vary more here than in provinces with a set licensing structure. Every profile lists its fee up front, so you can compare before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Canadian Certified Counsellor licensed in Saskatchewan?

Saskatchewan doesn’t currently regulate counselling or psychotherapy, so there’s no provincial college issuing licenses the way there is for psychologists or social workers.

The CCC itself is a real credential. It requires a master’s degree in counselling or a related field, required coursework, and supervised practicum hours, issued and tracked by CCPA, a national professional association.

A group called FACT-SK has applied for provincial regulation, but there’s no confirmed timeline for when, or if, that changes.

What’s the difference between a CCC and a Registered Social Worker in Saskatchewan?

A Registered Social Worker (RSW) holds a legally protected title under Saskatchewan’s Social Workers Act, enforced by SASW, with real penalties for misusing it.

A CCC is a national certification through the CCPA, not a government license. Some counsellors hold both.

Both provide talk therapy for similar concerns. The difference is which body oversees the credential: a provincial college for one, a national association for the other.

Does my insurance cover a Canadian Certified Counsellor in Saskatchewan?

Often, but it depends on how your plan is written. Some plans name “Canadian Certified Counsellor” or “CCPA” specifically; others use a broader category like “registered counsellor” or “mental health practitioner.”

Plans that name a specific designation are the ones that catch people out.

Check your plan’s wording before booking, then match it to the exact designation shown on the profile.

How do I know a Canadian Certified Counsellor in Saskatchewan is actually qualified?

Every First Session counsellor in Saskatchewan is vetted and verified before being listed. For peace of mind, you can also check their registration status in the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) Directory.

Can a Canadian Certified Counsellor diagnose a mental health condition in Saskatchewan?

No. The CCC covers counselling and psychotherapy, but not formal psychological assessment or diagnosis.

If the goal is a diagnosis for medication or a workplace accommodation, a psychologist or physician is the right professional. For most concerns, therapy itself doesn’t require a diagnosis first.

Does counselling work as well online as in person in Saskatchewan?

Both formats are standard for general counselling concerns like anxiety, stress, and relationship issues. What changes practically is the setting, in person or over video, rather than the content of the sessions themselves.

Saskatchewan counsellors, whether based locally or working with you online from elsewhere in Canada, are reimbursed by insurance on the same terms either way.
