What is a Registered Psychotherapist?

Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is a regulated designation in Ontario, granted by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). RPs hold a relevant master's degree, complete supervised clinical hours, and meet ongoing continuing education requirements.

You may see Registered Psychotherapists on First Session serving Vancouver as online practitioners. Because psychotherapy regulation varies province to province, RPs registered in Ontario are insured to provide online therapy to clients in BC. They are not, however, licensed to work in BC under a BC-specific credential. In Vancouver, the equivalent locally regulated credential is the Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), granted by the BCACC.

RPs work across a wide range of areas: anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, ADHD, grief, life transitions, couples therapy, burnout, and more. Many have additional training in specialized modalities like EMDR, IFS, somatic approaches, or DBT.

What to know about Registered Psychotherapists in Vancouver

RP vs. RCC in Vancouver

If you're based in Vancouver and want in-person therapy, you'll typically see RCCs rather than RPs, since RCC is the primary BC-regulated counselling credential. Registered Psychotherapists in Vancouver on First Session are most likely offering online sessions as Ontario-licensed practitioners serving BC clients remotely. If in-person is important to you, filter for RCCs in Vancouver or confirm the therapist's in-person availability.

Does insurance cover Registered Psychotherapists?

Coverage varies significantly by insurer. Some BC employers and private benefit plans cover RPs; others cover only BC-specific designations, such as RCC or RSW. Check your specific plan and confirm the therapist's exact designation before booking. All First Session therapists provide receipts for reimbursement.

Online vs. in-person for RPs in Vancouver

Most RPs serving Vancouver on First Session offer online sessions. Online therapy is fully effective for most concerns. If in-person is a priority, the therapist's profile will indicate whether they're based in Vancouver and offering face-to-face appointments.

How to choose a Registered Psychotherapist in Vancouver

1. Confirm their credential and insurance eligibility

RP is an Ontario designation. Confirm your insurance plan covers RPs for online sessions in BC before booking. Not all plans do. Check the Insurance Coverage field on the therapist's profile.

2. Check their specialty areas

Registered Psychotherapist is a broad credential. The profile tells you where their expertise actually lies. Trauma, relationships, ADHD, grief, couples, and so on. Make sure their specialties match what you're bringing.

3. Watch the intro video

Every therapist on First Session has a short intro video. It's the fastest way to assess whether their communication style and energy feel like a possible fit before you commit to a consultation.

4. Use the free consultation

Ask: Are you able to work with BC clients online? Is your designation covered by my insurance plan? What experience do you have with [your specific concern]?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Registered Psychotherapist and a Registered Clinical Counsellor?

RP is the primary regulated counselling credential in Ontario, granted by the CRPO. RCC is the primary regulated counselling credential in BC, granted by the BCACC. Both designations require a relevant master's degree and supervised clinical hours. The main difference is jurisdiction: RCCs are BC-regulated, RPs are Ontario-regulated. For in-person therapy in Vancouver, you'll typically see RCCs. For online therapy, you may see either.

Can a Registered Psychotherapist work with clients in Vancouver?

Yes, for online therapy. Ontario-registered RPs are insured to provide online care to clients in other provinces, including BC. They cannot, however, hold themselves out as BC-regulated practitioners or offer in-person services in BC under the RP designation.

Does my BC insurance cover Registered Psychotherapists?

It depends on your plan. Some BC employers and private benefit plans cover RPs, particularly for online sessions; others are limited to BC-specific designations such as RCC or RSW. Check your plan directly before booking.

Can I do therapy online with a Registered Psychotherapist in Vancouver?

Yes. Most RPs on First Session serving Vancouver offer online sessions. Online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns.

How does First Session verify therapist credentials?

All therapists on First Session are licensed professionals. Credentials are verified during onboarding, and each therapist's designation is displayed clearly on their profile, so you can confirm it matches what your insurance covers before booking.

How does the free 15-minute consultation work?

After browsing profiles and watching intro videos, you can book a free 15-minute consultation directly from any therapist's profile. It's a short call to ask questions, get a sense of their style, and decide whether to move forward. No commitment is required.
