What does RSW mean?

A Registered Social Worker (RSW) is a protected professional designation in Ontario, regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). To use the title, practitioners must complete an accredited social work degree, meet the College's registration requirements, and adhere to ongoing professional and ethical standards.

Many Registered Social Workers provide psychotherapy. Their training often emphasizes understanding mental health within the broader context of a person's relationships, family, community, culture, and life circumstances, not just their symptoms. Depending on their experience, RSWs may use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), trauma-informed therapy, family systems therapy, and other modalities.

RSWs are distinct from Registered Psychotherapists (RPs), who are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Both RSWs and RPs are qualified to provide psychotherapy in Ontario, but they follow different education and licensing pathways and are regulated by different professional colleges.

What to know about Registered Social Workers in Greater Sudbury

Online therapy availability

There are currently no First Session therapists offering in-person appointments in Greater Sudbury. However, Ontario residents can access secure online therapy with Registered Social Workers located anywhere in the province, giving you a much wider selection of therapists.

Language availability

Greater Sudbury is home to one of Ontario's largest Francophone communities outside the Ottawa region. Some Registered Social Workers on First Session offer therapy in both French and English. If language is important to you, check each therapist's profile before booking.

Regulation and credential verification

All Registered Social Workers practising in Ontario are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). You can verify a therapist's registration through the College's public register at any time. First Session also verifies therapists during onboarding, and each therapist's registration number is displayed on their profile for transparency.

Insurance coverage

The Registered Social Worker designation is commonly covered by Ontario extended health benefits and employer insurance plans. Coverage varies by insurer and policy, so it's worth confirming your eligibility before booking. You can also check each therapist's profile to see the insurance providers they work with.

How to choose a Registered Social Worker in Greater Sudbury

Consider language preferences

If you'd prefer to receive therapy in French, review therapist profiles to confirm language availability before scheduling your first session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does RSW mean in Ontario?

Registered Social Worker is a protected title for practitioners who hold an accredited social work degree and are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Is RSW different from RP in Ontario?

Yes. Both can legally provide psychotherapy in Ontario, but RSW is regulated by the OCSWSSW and comes from a social work training background, while RP is regulated by the CRPO and comes from a psychotherapy-specific training path. The right fit depends on the individual practitioner rather than the designation alone.

Is RSW therapy covered by insurance?

Many Ontario benefit plans cover RSWs, though coverage depends on your specific plan. Check each therapist's profile under Insurance Coverage and confirm with your provider.

Is in-person therapy with an RSW available in Greater Sudbury?

In-person availability is currently limited in Greater Sudbury. Most residents connect with an RSW online, which gives access to a wider range of specialists than an in-person-only search in a smaller Northern Ontario market would.

Can I find a French-speaking RSW in Greater Sudbury?

Some RSWs on First Session serving Greater Sudbury offer sessions in French, reflecting the area's significant Francophone community. Check individual therapist profiles for language availability.

What concerns do RSWs in Greater Sudbury typically work with?

RSWs on First Session serving the area cover anxiety, depression, trauma, family issues, addiction, and more, often with attention to the broader circumstances - financial, family, or community - surrounding a person's mental health.
