What is PTSD therapy?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a diagnosis that can follow exposure to traumatic events. You can book a PTSD therapist directly, and a diagnosis or doctor's referral is not needed to start.
The American Psychological Association's PTSD guideline recommends offering three psychotherapies: cognitive behavioural therapy, cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure. Ask a therapist which of the three they use.
A bio lists training, but it cannot tell you how a therapist sounds when you describe something painful. Each First Session profile has a short intro video for that. This page also lists therapists elsewhere in Canada who are insured to provide online care in Manitoba.
What to know about PTSD therapy in Winnipeg
Online and in-person
A therapist can lead PTSD treatment in an office or by video. A video session lets you attend from a room you choose.
Therapists in the second list above live outside Manitoba and are insured to provide online care to clients in the province.
Credentials in Manitoba
According to the Manitoba College of Social Workers, the titles Social Worker and Registered Social Worker are protected under The Social Work Profession Act. The Psychologists Registration Act restricts the word psychologist to registered people.
The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association reports that Manitoba does not regulate counselling therapy or psychotherapy (page current as of February 2024). The designation on each First Session profile shows which credential a therapist holds.
Cost and insurance
GreenShield reports national private-pay ranges of $120 to $200 per session for social workers, $140 to $225 for counsellors and $200 to $400 for psychologists. Fees appear on each profile before you book.
Manulife states that coverage amounts, maximums and practitioner types depend on the plan. You receive a receipt after each session to submit for reimbursement.
The Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba says its PTSD presumption applies to all workers covered by workers compensation in the province. A physician or psychologist must make the diagnosis, and the board reviews each claim individually.
Serving and former Canadian Forces members and eligible RCMP members can also use the Operational Stress Injury Clinic at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg.
How to choose a PTSD therapist in Winnipeg
1Look for trauma training in the bio
The APA guideline names cognitive behavioural therapy, cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure. CAMH advises referral to a psychotherapist experienced in treating psychological trauma. Look for those therapy names, or EMDR, and for years of trauma work in the bio.
2Watch the intro video
Telling your story to a new person is hard. A short video shows a therapist's pace, tone and the way they talk about trauma before you commit time or money.
3Match the designation to your plan
Some plans name the titles they cover, such as psychologist, registered social worker or counsellor. Read your benefits booklet first, then filter by designation and compare it with the title on the profile.
4Use the free consultation
Book the free 15-minute consultation. Ask which trauma therapies they are trained in, how they pace the first sessions, and what happens if a memory feels too strong during a session.
