“I wish I’d known about this platform sooner! I loved the introductory videos–this is what helped me choose the therapist to book an intro consultation with.”

First Session Client, 2025

Helping Every Therapy Seeker Find the Right Fit

Compatibility is the most important factor when choosing a psychotherapist. But finding the right fit isn’t easy. First Session takes the time, guesswork, and emotional labour out of that process.

  • Search a curated therapist network

Narrow your search to a list of rigorously vetted therapists you’ll actually consider booking. Because finding a therapist shouldn’t involve reading endless generic bios.

  • Assess for fit before you commit

Decide if a therapist is the right fit for you before booking with interview videos and in-depth bios. No more switching or re-telling your private feelings and story

  • Book directly (and instantly)

Schedule an available session or free consultation right from the First Session platform. No 3rd party intake calls or back and forth emailing required.

Free yourself from the stress of endless searching and switching

Convenience-first approach to finding a Registered Psychotherapist

  • Burnout from endless search results and unhelpful Registered Psychotherapist profiles.
  • Disappointment and frustration from generic intake calls and unproductive ‘free’ consultations.
  • Emotional stress from repeatedly revealing private thoughts and feelings to incompatible Registered Psychotherapists
  • Stalled mental health progress because of limited availability, timezone differences, or constantly switching providers
  • Risk of abandoning therapy process altogether because of frustration, exhaustion, or depression

Connection-first approach to finding a Registered Psychotherapist with First Session

  • Instantly create a short-list of Registered Psychotherapists qualified to support your journey
  • Get to know a Registered Psychotherapist’s personality, approach, and experience before booking
  • Share your private history, thoughts, and feelings only if there’s a connection
  • Save time and minimize stress by finding the right fit without endless switching
  • Make meaningful progress sooner and commit to lasting, meaningful change

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Registered Psychotherapist" actually mean?

It's a protected title in Ontario, regulated by CRPO, the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Only someone registered with CRPO can legally use it.

RPs are authorized to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy, the same legally defined act psychologists and some physicians are also authorized to perform.

What's the difference between RP and RP (Qualifying)?

An RP has met all of CRPO's requirements for full, independent registration. An RP (Qualifying) is still completing supervised practice toward that, working under required clinical supervision in the meantime.

Both are legitimate, regulated categories, and a profile's exact status tells you which applies.

Does insurance cover a Registered Psychotherapist?

Usually, though the exact answer depends on how your plan is written. Plans that name "Registered Psychotherapist" or "Psychotherapist" specifically are the most straightforward to claim against.

Some older plans still use "Counselling Therapist" or a broader "mental health practitioner" category, so match your plan's exact wording rather than assuming.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person for anxiety or depression?

For most common approaches, including CBT, research comparing video-delivered psychotherapy to in-person treatment has found comparable outcomes.

Any RP registered in Ontario can see you online, including therapists based elsewhere in Canada who are insured to provide online care to Ontario clients.

Can I find a Registered Psychotherapist in Richmond Hill who speaks Persian or Mandarin?

Yes. Richmond Hill's Persian- and Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking communities are reflected in the local therapist pool.

Sessions can be filtered by language to find a match directly, rather than guessing from a bio.

Do I need a referral to see a Registered Psychotherapist?

No referral is required. You can book directly, including a free 15-minute consultation before committing to ongoing sessions.

A referral can still matter for specific insurance plans that require one, separately from whether the therapist requires it, so confirm that directly with your plan.

You deserve more from therapy.

You made the courageous decision to reach your full potential. Find the right psychotherapist to help get you there, and make the most of the time and money you’re investing in yourself.
