What is a Canadian Certified Counsellor?
Counselling therapy is not yet regulated in Newfoundland and Labrador, according to the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). A national credential is one way to see what training a counsellor has.
The Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) is a voluntary certification run by CCPA. Its application asks for a master's or equivalent graduate degree, at least 150 client training hours and two supporting references. Holders agree to follow CCPA's Code of Ethics.
First Session lists CCCs from across Canada who are insured to provide online therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador. Profiles include a short intro video and a free 15-minute consultation you can book directly.
What to know about CCC therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador
Online sessions and time zones
Sessions with the CCCs on this page take place by video. CCPA's guidance for practitioners working across provinces says they must meet the client's jurisdiction requirements and use a platform that meets local privacy laws.
Newfoundland Time is UTC-3:30 in standard time. In Labrador, communities from Cartwright northward and westward use Atlantic Time, so confirm each appointment time with your counsellor.
Credentials in Newfoundland and Labrador
CCPA reports that an application for regulation, led by the alliance FACT-NL, has passed the proposal stage with the provincial government. CCPA adds that the province has consulted other professional groups and the next step is to be determined once those finish.
Until a regulator exists, the CCC remains a voluntary credential. CCPA says holders answer to a complaints and disciplinary process. Memorial University's Master of Education in Counselling Psychology says its graduates can become eligible for the CCC.
Cost and insurance
Therapists serving the province list fees from $125 to $200 per session on First Session, and the CCC profiles reviewed for this page run from $150 to $200. Sun Life added clinical counsellors, including CCCs, to its standard extended health plans as of May 12, 2024, under existing shared maximums.
After each session you pay by card and receive an emailed receipt showing the therapist's name, license number and designation. You then upload it to your insurer to claim.
Public walk-in counselling
Doorways offers walk-in counselling for ages 12 and up in the Eastern, Central, Western and Labrador-Grenfell regions. The Bridge the gApp directory lists it without an appointment or referral. For a crisis, call 811.
How to choose a Canadian Certified Counsellor in Newfoundland and Labrador
1Match the specialty to your concern
The CCC shows graduate training and supervised client hours. The bio shows what a counsellor treats. Use the specialty filters to shortlist counsellors who list your concern, such as anxiety, grief or relationships.
2Watch the intro video
A bio tells you what someone was trained in. A short video shows how they talk and whether you could picture telling them something hard. First Session profiles include one for that reason.
3Use the free consultation
Ask which graduate program they completed and what client work it included. Ask how they approach your concern and how they handle sessions across time zones.
4Compare the fee with your plan
Read the fee on the profile, then ask your insurer whether the CCC is a named provider. The profile shows the designation, so you can match it to your plan before booking.
