Find an IFS Therapist

Browse therapists who specialize in Internal Family Systems therapy. Watch their intro videos to find the right fit before booking.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that views the mind as made up of distinct parts, each with its own perspective and qualities. These parts often develop to protect us, though sometimes their strategies become outdated or extreme. IFS helps you develop a compassionate relationship with all your parts, accessing your core Self to facilitate healing and integration.

On First Session, you can browse therapists who offer IFS and watch their intro videos to get a sense of their warmth and approach. All therapists have their credentials verified during onboarding. Whether you prefer online or in-person sessions, you can book directly or request a free consultation to find the right match.

Therapy is hard work.

Finding the right therapist shouldn’t be. Over 10,000 Canadians found their new therapist with First Session.
What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Internal Family Systems is a form of therapy that helps you understand and heal by working with the different parts of your psyche. IFS recognizes that we all have various parts—like an inner critic, a caretaker, or a wounded child—and that these parts often carry burdens from past experiences. The goal is to help you access your core Self, which can then lead healing within your internal system.

How can IFS help?

Many people find IFS helpful for trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and self-criticism. It can support you in understanding why you react certain ways, healing wounded parts of yourself, and developing more internal harmony. IFS is known for being gentle and non-pathologizing, treating all parts of you with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment.

What happens in an IFS session?

In IFS sessions, your therapist will guide you in turning your attention inward and getting to know your different parts. You might visualize or sense these parts, learn what they're protecting you from, and help them unburden old pain. Your therapist supports you in accessing your Self—the calm, curious, compassionate core—to lead this internal work.

How do I find an IFS therapist?

On First Session, you can filter by specialty to find therapists who offer Internal Family Systems therapy. Each therapist has a profile with an intro video so you can get a sense of their approach. You can book a session directly online or request a free consultation first. All therapists on the platform have their credentials verified during onboarding.

Is IFS right for me?

IFS may be a good fit if you're drawn to a gentle, parts-based approach to understanding yourself. It's particularly helpful if you notice conflicting feelings or inner voices, or if you want to heal from past experiences in a compassionate way. Consider booking a consultation with a therapist to discuss whether IFS might be right for you.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Browse IFS therapists on First Session and watch their intro videos to find someone whose warmth resonates with you. Once you've found a match, you can book your first session directly online. Many therapists offer a free 15-minute consultation if you'd like to connect first.
