What is trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy treats the lasting effects of frightening or overwhelming events, such as a car crash, an assault, childhood abuse or a military deployment. The Public Health Agency of Canada describes posttraumatic stress disorder as a mental disorder that may follow a potentially traumatic event involving real or threatened death, severe injury or sexual violence.

Veterans Affairs Canada names three therapies as the most effective for PTSD and recommends them over medication: prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy and EMDR. It adds that some kinds of therapy take only a few months to complete.

A bio lists training, but it cannot show how someone sounds when you describe something painful. Every First Session profile includes a short intro video, and you can book a free 15-minute consultation from the profile before you commit.

What to know about trauma therapy in Moncton

Online and in-person

Moncton residents can book with therapists registered in New Brunswick, and the second list above shows therapists from other provinces who are insured to provide online therapy in New Brunswick.

The guide to online and in-person therapy in the resources library cites research finding that online counselling can be as effective as face-to-face counselling in reducing psychological distress.

Credentials in New Brunswick

Psychologists register with the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick, which protects titles such as Psychologist and Registered Psychologist.

Social workers use the protected title RSW through the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers. Counselling therapists hold the Licensed Counselling Therapist title through the College of Licensed Counselling Therapists of New Brunswick, which the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association lists as proclaimed on June 1, 2017.

First Session confirms each therapist is licensed and in good standing with their provincial college, and the designation appears on every profile.

Cost and insurance

Psychology Today's Moncton listings put the average session at $160, with $105 to $136 as the middle price band. Crux Psychology, which serves New Brunswick, charges $240 for an individual hour with a psychologist and states that provincial health insurance does not cover private-practice psychologists.

Fees are shown on First Session profiles before you book, and receipts are provided for extended health claims.

French and English

The Government of New Brunswick calls the province Canada's only officially bilingual province. Vitalité Health Network lists a Community Mental Health Centre at 81 Albert Street, 4th floor, open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, for assessment and crisis intervention.

How to choose a trauma therapist in Moncton

1Ask which protocol they deliver

Veterans Affairs Canada names prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy and EMDR as the most effective PTSD treatments. Ask which of the three the therapist offers, how many sessions they usually plan, and whether their training is finished or still underway.

2Match the designation to your plan

Psychologist, RSW and Licensed Counselling Therapist are all protected titles in New Brunswick. Read your benefits booklet for the designations it names, then filter by trauma and by credential.

3Watch the intro video first

Each therapist is interviewed on camera for a typical 60 minutes before listing, and that footage becomes the profile video. Trauma work depends on feeling steady with the person across from you, so use the video to hear pace and tone.

4Use the free consultation for a pacing question

Ask how the first month looks, and whether the work starts with coping skills or moves straight to the memories. Their answer tells you whether the pace suits you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicare cover trauma therapy in Moncton?

Provincial health insurance does not cover private-practice psychologists, according to Crux Psychology, which serves New Brunswick. Extended health plans may cover trauma therapy.

The Vitalité Community Mental Health Centre in Moncton can be reached at 506-862-4144 to ask which services it offers. On First Session, fees and designations are visible before booking.

Which therapies work best for PTSD?

Veterans Affairs Canada recommends prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy and EMDR. Prolonged exposure teaches you to gradually approach trauma-related memories and situations. Cognitive processing therapy focuses on thoughts that developed after the trauma.

EMDR has you briefly focus on the memory while experiencing bilateral stimulation, often eye movements. Filter by modality to shortlist therapists trained in each.

Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to start trauma therapy in Moncton?

No. You can book trauma therapy for the effects of a past event without a diagnosis, and PHAC describes PTSD as a disorder that may follow such an event.

A diagnosis mainly matters for formal claims. If you plan to claim through a workers' compensation board or Veterans Affairs Canada, ask that agency which documents it requires.

Can trauma therapy be done online from Moncton?

Yes. Research cited in the resources library's online versus in-person guide found online counselling can be as effective as face-to-face counselling in reducing psychological distress.

Therapists must be registered to practise in New Brunswick, and out-of-province therapists in the second list are insured to provide online care there. Choose a private room where you can speak freely.

Can I find a French-speaking trauma therapist in Moncton?

Yes. New Brunswick is officially bilingual, and the language filter on First Session narrows the list to therapists who work in French.

Combine it with the trauma specialty filter, then watch the intro videos to hear whether their French, their pacing and their approach fit.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a social worker and a counselling therapist for trauma?

Each holds a protected title with its own regulator in New Brunswick: the College of Psychologists, the Association of Social Workers, and the College of Licensed Counselling Therapists. The title shows the regulator and the training path.

Trauma skill comes from specific training in methods such as EMDR or cognitive processing therapy. Ask each therapist what they completed.
