Frequently Asked Questions

What can a Registered Social Worker do?

In Ontario, a Registered Social Worker can assess, treat, and evaluate individual, interpersonal, and societal problems. RSWs may work with individuals, couples, families, groups, and communities. Many RSWs in private practice provide psychotherapy, while others may also work in advocacy, case management, community services, consultation, or program development. The specific focus depends on the individual social worker's training and practice.

Is a Registered Social Worker the same as a Registered Psychotherapist?

No. RSWs and RPs are different regulated professions with different training backgrounds. RSWs usually have a Bachelor's and/or Master's in Social Work, and RPs usually have a degree in psychology and/or psychotherapy. That said, both can provide psychotherapy in Ontario.

Can a Registered Social Worker diagnose a mental health condition?

No. In Canada, social workers can assess and treat mental health issues and conditions, but only psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors can make a formal mental health diagnosis.

Does insurance cover Registered Social Workers in Vaughan?

Usually, yes. RSW is one of the designations most employer plans name specifically, alongside Registered Psychotherapist and Psychologist. Coverage varies, so check your specific plan.

Is online therapy with an RSW as effective as in-person?

Yes. Online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns, and many clients find it a convenient option. That said, in some circumstances, like in couples therapy or working with young children, in-person therapy may be more fitting. Discuss it with your therapist during your free consultation if you aren't sure which format is best for you.

How much does an RSW session cost in Vaughan?

Therapy with an RSW in Ontario typically costs $130-$200 per session. Most extended health plans cover RSW sessions, which can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs. Some RSWs also offer sliding-scale rates, which reduce the cost based on a client's financial circumstances. Each therapist lists their exact rate on their First Session profile, so you can make an informed decision before booking.
