What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma-focused therapy. According to the US National Center for PTSD, you hold a memory in mind while following a back-and-forth movement or sound until distress drops.
Guidelines rank EMDR differently. The American Psychological Association's 2025 guideline lists it as a second-line treatment for PTSD, according to a published critique. The 2023 US VA and Department of Defense guideline names it among its recommended psychotherapies.
Training depth differs between therapists. First Session bios state training level, and the modality filter narrows the list to EMDR.
What to know about EMDR therapy in Regina
Online and in-person
The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) says online EMDR may differ from in-person sessions and can be just as effective for reducing emotional charge. Bilateral stimulation is often delivered through a screen, audio tones or physical tapping.
Section A lists therapists based in Regina. Section B lists therapists from elsewhere in Canada who are insured to provide online therapy in Saskatchewan.
Credentials in Saskatchewan
The Saskatchewan College of Psychologists says you must be registered with the College to use the title "psychologist." Under The Social Workers Act, only members of the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers may use the title "social worker."
The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association does not list Saskatchewan as a province that regulates counselling therapists. A federation of counsellors, FACT-SK, is working toward regulation.
Cost and insurance
One Regina clinic, Prairie Psychology, lists $235 per hour for psychologists and $180 per hour for registered social workers. Each profile lists the session fee before you book.
According to First Session's coverage guide, plans name the professionals they cover. Match the designation on the profile to your plan's wording.
Time zone and local support
Most of Saskatchewan stays on Central Standard Time all year, so the gap with provinces that change their clocks shifts twice a year. Listings use CST unless a profile notes another time zone.
The Government of Saskatchewan lists Mobile Crisis Regina at 306-757-0127 for 24/7 crisis support. Call or text 9-8-8 for the Suicide Crisis Helpline, or call 911 if your safety is at immediate risk.
How to choose an EMDR therapist in Regina
1Ask about EMDR training
EMDRIA certification requires a full practice licence, EMDRIA-approved basic training, at least 50 EMDR sessions with 25 clients, and 20 hours of consultation. Ask whether a therapist holds EMDRIA certification or has completed basic training.
2Read the designation
First Session requires every therapist to be licensed and in good standing with their provincial college. The profile shows the designation, so match it to your plan's wording, such as psychologist or registered social worker.
3Ask how they prepare you
The National Center for PTSD says treatment starts with learning about trauma reactions and building coping skills. Ask how many sessions a therapist spends on preparation before you begin processing a memory.
4Watch the intro video
A short intro video sits on each profile. Trauma work depends on feeling safe with the person, and the video lets you hear their tone and pace before you book.
5Use the free consultation
Use the free 15-minute consultation on the profile to ask about setup. If you plan to meet online, ask how the therapist delivers bilateral stimulation on video and what you need at home.
