It combines acceptance and change strategies to help you build a life that feels worth living.

Therapy is hard work.

Finding the right therapist shouldn’t be. Over 10,000 Canadians found their new therapist with First Session.
What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a structured form of therapy that teaches practical skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It balances acceptance of your current experience with strategies for change. DBT often includes both individual therapy sessions and skills groups, though format may vary by therapist.

How can DBT help?

Many people find DBT helpful for managing overwhelming emotions, reducing impulsive behaviours, and improving relationships. It can support you in developing skills to tolerate distress without making things worse, regulate your emotions more effectively, and communicate your needs clearly. DBT is often used for borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety, and self-harm.

What happens in a DBT session?

In individual DBT sessions, you and your therapist will typically review your week, discuss any challenges, and work on applying DBT skills to real-life situations. You may use diary cards to track emotions and behaviours between sessions. Some therapists also offer DBT skills groups where you learn and practice skills with others. The approach is collaborative and structured.

How do I find a DBT therapist?

On First Session, you can filter by specialty to find therapists who offer Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Each therapist has a profile with an intro video so you can get a sense of who they are. You can book a session directly online or request a free consultation to ask questions first. All therapists on the platform have their credentials verified during onboarding.

Is DBT right for me?

DBT may be a good fit if you struggle with intense emotions, impulsive behaviours, or relationship difficulties. It's particularly helpful if you want to learn concrete skills you can practice daily. If you're unsure whether DBT is right for your situation, consider booking a consultation with a therapist to discuss your goals and see if it feels like a good match.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Browse DBT therapists on First Session and watch their intro videos to find someone whose style resonates with you. Once you've found a match, you can book your first session directly online. Many therapists also offer a free 15-minute consultation if you'd like to connect first.
