What does RSW mean?

A Registered Social Worker (RSW) is a protected professional designation in Ontario, regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). To use the title, practitioners must complete an accredited social work degree, meet the College's registration requirements, and adhere to ongoing professional and ethical standards.

Many Registered Social Workers provide psychotherapy. Their training often emphasizes understanding mental health within the broader context of a person's relationships, family, community, culture, and life circumstances, not just their symptoms. Depending on their experience, RSWs may use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), trauma-informed therapy, family systems therapy, and other modalities.

RSWs are distinct from Registered Psychotherapists (RPs), who are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Both RSWs and RPs are qualified to provide psychotherapy in Ontario, but they follow different education and licensing pathways and are regulated by different professional colleges.
