What is a Registered Social Worker?

A Registered Social Worker (RSW) is a social worker registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Anyone who uses the title "registered social worker" in Ontario must be registered with the College.

According to the College, a bachelor's or master's degree in social work from an accredited program meets the academic requirements. The College also confirms that RSWs can provide psychotherapy under Ontario law.

A title and a degree say little about how a person talks with you. First Session profiles show the RSW designation, a short intro video and a written bio, and you can book a free 15-minute consultation from the profile.

What to know about Registered Social Workers in Oakville

Online and in-person

RSWs offer sessions by video or in an Oakville office, and the listings above show who offers which format.

Therapists in the second listing are based outside Ontario and are insured to provide online care to Ontario clients. That widens the choice of approach and background without leaving home.

Credentials in Ontario

The College regulates over 33,000 social workers and social service workers and keeps a public Online Register. Ontario does not permit the title "clinical social worker."

RSWs can perform psychotherapy without joining the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). "Registered psychotherapist" is a separate title held by CRPO members.

Cost and insurance

One Oakville RSW lists $170 for an individual session on Psychology Today. Registered Social Worker profiles on First Session show rates from $155 to $180.

Sun Life lists social workers among the practitioners on its standard extended health plans, with a shared maximum. After each session, First Session provides a receipt that shows the therapist's designation for your claim.

Free and crisis support in Halton

Distress Centre Halton answers its Oakville line, 905-849-4541, 24 hours a day when volunteers are available. The service is free and confidential. In a crisis, you can also call or text 9-8-8.

Adults 18 and older with symptoms of depression or anxiety can self-refer to the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program, which Ontario Health describes as free and publicly funded.

How to choose a Registered Social Worker in Oakville

1Look for your concern in the profile

The RSW designation shows the training route. The bio shows the focus. Read for your concern by name, such as grief, anxiety, burnout or a relationship change, and for the approach the therapist uses with it.

2Match the designation to your plan

Open your benefits booklet and find the words "social worker" or "RSW." Each First Session profile shows the therapist's exact designation. Compare it with the wording in your plan before you book.

3Watch the intro videos

A short video shows pace, tone and warmth. Pick two or three RSWs whose style feels easy to listen to, then book a free consultation with each.

4Ask about psychotherapy training

The College states that psychotherapy is not an entry-to-practice competency and that the skills develop with experience. In your consultation, ask which psychotherapy training the RSW has completed and how often they work with your concern.

5Pick the format you can keep up

A session that fits your week is easier to attend. Choose between an Oakville office and video from home, and switch formats later if your schedule changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Registered Social Worker the same as a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario?

No. They are two titles from two colleges. The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers registers RSWs, and the CRPO registers registered psychotherapists.

RSWs can perform psychotherapy and may call themselves psychotherapists when they follow the College's title rules. Both designations appear on First Session profiles, so you can filter by the one your plan names.

Does insurance cover Registered Social Workers in Oakville?

It can, depending on your plan. Sun Life, for example, lists social workers among the covered practitioners on its standard extended health plans, with a shared maximum alongside psychologists.

In May 2025 the College wrote to nearly 20 insurers to clarify that RSWs can provide psychotherapy. It states that it has no authority to change what insurers reimburse.

Look in your benefits booklet for "social worker" and the dollar limit.

How much does a Registered Social Worker cost in Oakville?

One Oakville RSW lists $170 per individual session on Psychology Today. Registered Social Worker profiles on First Session show $155 to $180 per session.

The fee appears on each profile before you book. Keep the receipt from each session for your claim.

Is a "clinical social worker" the same as an RSW?

In Ontario, the title "clinical social worker" is not permitted for College members. Some insurers and websites use it as another name for an RSW.

Look for "Registered Social Worker" or "RSW" on the profile. An MSW is a degree, and the College registration is what allows the title.

Can I see an RSW online if I live in Oakville?

Yes. The online listing above shows Registered Social Workers from other provinces who are insured to provide online care to Ontario clients.

Watch their intro videos the same way you would for a local RSW, and book the free 15-minute consultation from the profile.

Where can I get free support in Oakville while I look for a therapist?

Distress Centre Halton's Oakville line, 905-849-4541, is free and confidential. In a crisis, call or text 9-8-8.

The CMHA Halton resource guide lists Halton one-Link, 905-338-4123, for addictions and mental health referrals. Adults 18 and older with depression or anxiety symptoms can also self-refer to the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program.
