What's the difference between an RSW and a Registered Psychotherapist (RP)?

RSWs and RPs are regulated mental health professions with different training backgrounds. RSWs usually have a Bachelor's and/or Master's in Social Work, and RPs usually have a degree in psychology and/or psychotherapy. Both can provide psychotherapy in Ontario.

Can an RSW diagnose a mental health condition?

No. In Canada, social workers can assess and treat mental health issues and conditions, but only psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors can make a formal mental health diagnosis.

How much do RSW sessions cost in Markham?

Therapy with an RSW in Ontario typically costs $130-$200 per session. Most extended health plans cover RSW sessions, which can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs. Some RSWs also offer sliding-scale rates, which reduce the cost based on a client's financial circumstances.
