What Is a Registered Clinical Counsellor?

A Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) is a counsellor registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). BCACC is a professional association, and it grants the title when a counsellor meets its requirements.

According to BCACC, applicants need a master's degree in clinical counselling, psychotherapy or a relevant area. They also complete coursework in six core topics and at least 100 hours of clinical supervision, with at least 25 hours of direct supervision.

A bio lists training, but it cannot show how a counsellor sounds in conversation. First Session profiles include a short intro video and show the designation, so you can judge fit before you book.

What to know about Registered Clinical Counsellors in Kamloops

Online and in-person

Kamloops residents can book video sessions or sessions in the room, and the listings above show who offers which. A McMaster University review of 54 randomized trials of cognitive behavioural therapy found moderate-certainty evidence of probably little to no difference in effectiveness between remote and in-person delivery.

Out-of-province counsellors on First Session are insured to provide online care in British Columbia, which widens the field you can compare.

Credentials in British Columbia

BCACC grants the RCC title. According to First Session's guide to finding a counsellor in BC, the word 'counsellor' is not regulated by law in the province.

The BC government says regulation of psychotherapy begins on November 29, 2027, under the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. The title 'psychotherapist' is reserved for licensed practitioners. Practitioners outside that licence may keep using titles such as 'Counsellor'.

Cost and insurance

BCACC's 2026 fee guide recommends $140 to $155 per 50-minute session for RCCs with under three years of post-master's experience. For three to five years, it recommends $155 to $175. RCCs may charge more or less.

Sun Life lists Registered Clinical Counsellor among the clinical counsellor titles on its standard extended health plans for new proposals since May 12, 2024. Compare your own plan's wording with the designation on the profile.

Public services in Kamloops

Interior Health runs a Mental Health & Substance Use centre at 100-235 Lansdowne Street. You can self-refer by calling 310-MHSU (6478) or dropping in from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with no doctor's referral.

For urgent support, the Interior Crisis Line Network answers 24/7 at 1-888-353-2273.

How to choose a Registered Clinical Counsellor in Kamloops

1Start with the specialty

BCACC sets the entry requirements for the RCC title, so the specialty on the profile does the sorting. Filter by your concern, then read each bio for named training such as EMDR or couples work.

2Watch the intro videos

A video shows pace, tone and warmth. Watch two or three, then shortlist the counsellors whose manner feels easy to talk to.

3Use the free consultation

Book the free 15-minute consultation from the profile and bring one concrete question. Good ones include 'How do you structure the first few sessions?' and 'What training do you have in this concern?'

4Check the fee and your plan

Fees appear on each profile before you book. Compare the rate with your plan's per-session limit, and confirm the plan names Registered Clinical Counsellors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Registered Clinical Counsellor the same as a psychotherapist in BC?

Today they are separate labels. RCC is a BCACC designation, and the BC government says 'psychotherapist' becomes a reserved title when regulation begins on November 29, 2027.

As of the Ministry's update on August 27, 2026, the college had not yet set its licensure requirements. Read each profile for the designation and training the counsellor lists now.

Does my insurance cover a Registered Clinical Counsellor in Kamloops?

It depends on how your plan lists providers. Sun Life, for example, names Registered Clinical Counsellor among the clinical counsellor titles on its standard extended health plans for new proposals since May 12, 2024.

BCACC advises contacting your plan provider before the first session to confirm the plan recognizes the RCC designation. First Session provides receipts for reimbursement.

Does MSP pay for counselling with an RCC?

According to HeretoHelp, private counselling is not government-funded. MSP may cover counselling that you access through a hospital or mental health clinic.

Some workplace benefits cover a set number of private sessions, and an Employee and Family Assistance Plan may offer sessions or referrals.

Can I find lower-cost counselling in Kamloops?

Some providers use a sliding scale, where the fee depends on income, and HeretoHelp suggests asking providers directly. The free 15-minute consultation is a good moment to raise it.

Interior Health's Kamloops centre is a public option that takes self-referrals at 310-MHSU (6478).

Does counselling with an RCC work over video?

For cognitive behavioural therapy, the McMaster review found moderate-certainty evidence of probably little to no difference between remote and in-person delivery. The authors called for more research on whether some people strongly prefer one format.

Watch an intro video, then use the free consultation by video to test how the format feels for you.

How do I know an RCC in Kamloops is qualified?

BCACC requires a relevant master's degree, at least 100 hours of clinical supervision and at least two references. Its page on RCCs adds that members have committed to an ethical code and hold a clean criminal record check.

First Session also interviews each therapist, verifies credentials and films an intro video before listing them.
