What couples therapy involves in Prince George
Couples therapy works on the pattern between two people. A therapist helps partners with recurring conflict, emotional distance, rebuilding trust after infidelity, a major life transition, or a decision about separating.
In BC, the professionals who offer this work hold different titles, and the rules for those titles are changing. According to the Government of BC, psychotherapy will be regulated from November 29, 2027, with a protected title for licensed practitioners.
The listings above include therapists based in BC and out-of-province therapists insured to provide online care to BC clients. Every First Session profile has a short intro video, so you can hear how a therapist speaks to two people at once before you book.
What to know about couples therapy in Prince George
Online and in-person
A video session lets partners join from one device or from separate places, for example when one of you is travelling for work. Each side needs a private room and a steady connection.
Online sessions are reimbursed by extended health plans on the same terms as in-person sessions. Out-of-province therapists on First Session are insured to provide online care in BC.
Credentials in British Columbia
Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) are credentialed by the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), a professional association. Psychologists hold an exclusive title under the Health Professions and Occupations Act, and registered social workers practise under the Social Workers Act.
From November 29, 2027, the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC) will license psychotherapists. Its eligibility standards have not been published yet.
Cost and insurance
BCACC's 2026 Fee Guide recommends $155 to $175 for a 50-minute couples or family session with a less experienced RCC, and $175 to $205 with a more experienced one.
Plans name the designations they cover. First Session profiles show the designation and the fee before you book, and receipts are provided for your claim.
Public services in Prince George
Northern Health's Mental Health and Substance Use Services at 1444 Edmonton Street offer adults counselling in person, by phone or by videochat, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, according to BC 211.
That listing does not mention couples therapy, so couples who want a therapist chosen by them can book privately here.
How to choose a couples therapist in Prince George
1Ask how they trained in couples work
The Gottman Institute says every therapist on its referral network has completed at least Level 2 training, and a gold label marks Certified Gottman Therapists. Ask a therapist which level they hold, or what supervision they completed in their method.
2Watch the intro videos together
Couples work depends on both partners trusting the same person. Watch two or three videos side by side and keep only the profiles you both respond to.
3Ask about the title in plain terms
Until the 2027 licensing starts, RCC, RSW and psychologist are the titles you will see on most profiles. Ask your insurer which of them your plan lists, then match it to the designation shown on the profile.
4Use the free consultation for a real scenario
Describe the argument you keep repeating and ask how the therapist would approach it in the first few sessions. Ask how they handle a partner who is less certain about attending.
