Frequently asked therapy questions

Is therapy covered by the TMU student insurance?

Yes, the TMU student insurance plan covers therapy services at 100% reimbursement up to a maximum.

How much does therapy cost with TMU student insurance?

The final cost depends on the therapist’s rate. First Session clearly lists every therapist’s session costs (taxes included where applicable) so you can easily consider your budget before reaching out to a practitioner. You can find therapists on First Session who offer sessions within your budget, or reach out to one offering a sliding scale and explain your student status and coverage limits.

Who is eligible for the TMU student insurance plan?

All full-time undergraduate students, including students in the Lincoln Alexander School of Law and IEEQB program, who are studying in person or online within Canada and have been charged the Health & Dental Plan fee on their tuition are automatically enrolled and eligible.

How much coverage is provided to TMU students for counselling and therapy?

Full-time TMU undergraduates are entitled to up to $1,000 per benefit year (September 1 – August 31) for mental health services, including therapy. This coverage reimburses you at 100%, meaning there’s no out-of-pocket percentage beyond the cap.

What therapists and counsellors are covered for TMU students?

TMU students are covered for Psychologists, Clinical Counsellors (ex. RCC), Social Workers, MSWs, and Registered Psychotherapists. Not sure which professional to choose? Learn about different designations and the importance of finding the right fit in this blog post.

Can I see in-person and online therapists?

Yes. Through First Session, you can find both in-person therapists in Toronto (look for “In-Person” on their profile) and online therapists. For insurance purposes, it doesn’t matter whether the session is online or in person. Both are eligible for reimbursement as long as the provider is covered.

Will I need to pay out of pocket for therapy?

Yes. You’ll pay for each session using your credit card at the time of your appointment. After the session, you’ll receive a detailed PDF receipt by email. This receipt includes everything your insurance provider needs for reimbursement, such as the therapist’s name, license number, designation, and clinic address. You can then submit the receipt to your student health insurance provider to get reimbursed.

How do I submit a claim for therapy sessions under the TMU student insurance plan?
  • Get a detailed receipt from your provider, including date, provider type, service, and cost. (We email this to you after each session)
  • Submit the claim to Green Shield Canada (GSC) using your GSC ID (your student number prefixed with “RSU”).
  • Ensure GSC receives your claim within 12 months of the date of service.

Is First Session affiliated with TMU?

No. First Session is an independent company and is not affiliated with TMU. We created this page to support TMU students, and all the information provided has been carefully researched. However, we encourage you to double-check details with your school if you're unsure. The therapists listed on First Session are carefully vetted licensed professionals, and their sessions are eligible for reimbursement through your student health insurance.
