What is a Registered Social Worker in BC?

A Registered Social Worker (RSW) is a social worker registered with the BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW), the provincial regulator. The College says only registrants may use the RSW title. Using a protected title without registration or an exemption is an offence.

Registration includes a licensure exam, and the College's exam page points to the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). ASWB has partnered with PSI to deliver the test.

Therapist profiles on First Session include an intro video and an in-depth bio. A few minutes of video shows how a Surrey RSW talks about their work before you book.

What to know about Registered Social Workers in Surrey

Online and in-person

Surrey residents can book video sessions or meet a therapist in person, and the listings above show who offers which.

Section B lists therapists based outside BC who are insured to provide online care to BC residents. First Session also lets you search by time zone to find a slot that fits your day.

Credentials in British Columbia

The BCCSW has a Full class, whose members use Social Worker, Registered Social Worker or RSW. Its Clinical class uses Registered Clinical Social Worker or RCSW.

Registrants renew each year and complete 40 hours of continuing professional development by October 31. Each profile shows the therapist's license and designation.

Cost and insurance

Surrey RSW profiles above list fees of about $160 to $175 per session at the time of writing. The BCACC 2026 fee guide lists $140 to $225 for 50-minute sessions with Registered Clinical Counsellors, depending on experience and specialty.

In an April 2024 announcement, Sun Life said its standard extended health plans cover social workers alongside psychologists under shared maximums. Your booklet shows the dollar limit.

Public services in Surrey

Fraser Health's Surrey Mental Health Centre is at 13401 108th Avenue, at Gateway SkyTrain Station. It lists assessment, treatment, individual and group therapy, and crisis intervention as self-referral services for people 19 and older.

If you are unsure which service fits, call the Fraser Health Access Line at 1-833-866-6478, open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

How to choose a Registered Social Worker in Surrey

1Start with your concern

Read each bio for the concern you want help with, such as grief, anxiety or a relationship problem. First Session filters narrow the list by specialty, language and gender. Pick the person whose experience matches your situation.

2Watch the intro video

A bio lists training. A video shows how someone speaks and listens. Watch two or three Surrey RSWs and note who you could talk to openly.

3Use the free 15-minute consultation

Book it straight from the profile. Ask how they have worked with your concern, how sessions are structured, and what their fee and cancellation policy are. You can also ask which class of BCCSW registration they hold.

4Match the designation to your plan

Check which provider type your benefits booklet lists social workers under. Then compare it with the RSW or RCSW designation on the profile. Therapists listed here are licensed and in good standing with their provincial college, so you can focus on fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does insurance cover a Registered Social Worker in Surrey?

It can, depending on how your plan is written. Sun Life said in April 2024 that its standard extended health plans cover social workers alongside psychologists under shared maximums.

The BC Public Service plan, run by Canada Life, pays up to $1,000 per year for each covered person for counselling. Eligible providers include qualified social workers.

Look in your booklet for the dollar limit and the provider list, then match it to the designation on the profile.

What is the difference between an RSW and an RCSW?

Both are BCCSW registrants in different classes. Full-class registrants use RSW, and Clinical-class registrants use RCSW.

The College points to Part 4 of its bylaws for what each class requires. In a free consultation, ask which class the therapist holds and what their clinical training involved.

Can anyone in BC call themselves a social worker?

No. The BCCSW says the title "social worker" is protected under the Social Workers Act. It may only be used by registrants or by people employed by organizations exempt under the Social Workers Regulation.

Those exemptions include certain employees of federal and provincial government, municipalities, school boards and delegated child and family agencies. For the RSW title, the College says only registrants may use it.

Can I see a Registered Social Worker in Surrey online?

Yes. Section A lists therapists based in Surrey. Section B lists therapists based elsewhere in Canada who are insured to provide online care to BC residents.

First Session's guide to online and in-person therapy says research suggests online sessions can be about as helpful as in-person ones. Book the free 15-minute consultation from a profile to try the format.

Are there public mental health services in Surrey?

Yes. Fraser Health runs the Surrey Mental Health Centre at Gateway SkyTrain Station, open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to its service directory.

Its services are self-referral for people 19 and older. The Access Line can help you find the right service, and its online form brings a callback within 48 hours.

A private RSW is another route. Compare video intros and fees in the listings above.

What receipt do I get for an RSW session in Surrey?

First Session emails a detailed receipt after each session. According to its insurance guide, the receipt shows the therapist's name, license number and designation, practice address, session date and amount paid.

Upload it to your insurer's portal with your claim. Reimbursement depends on your plan's limits and provider list.

You deserve more from therapy.

You made the courageous decision to reach your full potential. Find the right social worker to help get you there, and make the most of the time and money you’re investing in yourself.
