What is a Registered Psychotherapist?

“Registered Psychotherapist” is a specific, protected title in Ontario, regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). RPs must meet the college’s requirements for education, supervised practice, professional conduct, and ongoing competence.

RPs provide psychotherapy for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, grief, stress, and life transitions. Their approaches can vary considerably, from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy to mindfulness-based, somatic, and trauma-focused approaches.

Not everyone who describes themselves as a “psychotherapist” is an RP. Other regulated professionals, including Registered Social Workers and psychologists, may also provide psychotherapy. Every First Session profile shows the therapist’s specific professional designation, so you know exactly who you’re booking with.

What to know about Registered Psychotherapists in Brampton

Credentials in Ontario

“RP” refers to a Registered Psychotherapist fully registered with CRPO. Full registration requires completing the education, clinical experience, and supervision requirements set by the college.

“RP (Qualifying)” refers to a CRPO registrant who has met the requirements for that registration category and is completing the supervised clinical experience required for full registration. They practise under clinical supervision during this stage.

Both are regulated CRPO registration categories. The distinction reflects where the therapist is in the registration process, rather than whether one is a “real” psychotherapist and the other is not.

Other regulated professionals, including Registered Social Workers (RSWs), can also provide psychotherapy in Ontario when they meet their profession's requirements. Their professional designation differs from an RP. First Session profiles clearly state each therapist’s actual credentials.

Online and in-person therapy in Brampton

Registered Psychotherapists may offer therapy online, in person, or both, depending on their practice. For many common concerns and forms of talk therapy, online sessions can be an effective alternative to in-person sessions. Online therapy can also expand your options beyond therapists with offices in Brampton. You can work with RPs based elsewhere in Ontario, and in some cases, in other provinces, who are authorized to provide online therapy to clients in Brampton.

Cost and insurance

Registered Psychotherapist fees in Brampton and the GTA commonly range from $100 to $220 per session, though rates vary by therapist, experience, and practice.

Many extended health plans cover services from Registered Psychotherapists, but coverage varies between plans. Some plans specifically list “Registered Psychotherapist” or “psychotherapist,” while others use different eligible-provider categories. Most plans that cover "Registered Psychotherapists" will also reimburse sessions with an RP (Qualifying), though some insurers may ask for their supervisor's registration information on receipts.

Before booking, check your plan’s eligible provider designations, reimbursement percentage, annual maximum, and any per-session limits. Every First Session profile lists the therapist’s fee, and therapists provide receipts that you can submit to your insurer when eligible.

Language and identity fit

You may feel more comfortable working with someone who speaks your preferred language, understands your cultural background, or has experience working with a community or lived experience that is relevant to you.

First Session profiles let you filter therapists by language, identity or lived experience, specialty, therapeutic approach, and other preferences, helping you narrow your options based on what matters to you.

How to choose a Registered Psychotherapist in Brampton

1. Check the exact credential

Look at whether the therapist is registered as an “RP” or “RP (Qualifying).” Both are regulated CRPO categories; the difference is where the therapist is in the registration process and supervised clinical experience requirements.

2. Match specialty over designation

The RP designation tells you how the therapist is regulated, but it doesn't tell you what they specialize in. Two RPs may have very different areas of focus, therapeutic approaches, and experience.

Look for a therapist who regularly works with the concerns you want to address and uses an approach that feels appropriate for you.

3. Watch the intro video

A profile can tell you about a therapist’s education and experience, but it can be harder to get a sense of their communication style from text alone. Every First Session therapist profile includes a short introductory video, giving you another way to assess whether they seem like a potential fit.

4. Use the free consultation

First Session therapists offer a free 15-minute consultation that you can book directly from their profile. Use it to ask a specific question about your needs—for example, how they typically approach your concern or what you might expect from the first few sessions.

5. Confirm your insurance coverage

Before booking, check whether your extended health plan covers Registered Psychotherapists and whether it has reimbursement limits. Comparing your plan’s eligible-provider requirements with the designation listed on the therapist’s profile can help you avoid unexpected costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Registered Psychotherapist" actually mean in Ontario?

Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario are mental health professionals who have met the training and supervision requirements of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). The title has been legally protected since 2015, and only CRPO registrants, plus a short list of other regulated professionals, can perform psychotherapy as a controlled act.

Is an RP (Qualifying) fully licensed?

No, RPs (Qualifying) aren't fully licensed yet. They have completed their required education, such as a Master's degree, and are finishing final requirements. They can provide psychotherapy under supervision.

Do I need a referral or diagnosis to see a Registered Psychotherapist?

No. You can book a session directly with a Registered Psychotherapist in private practice, without a referral or diagnosis. That said, some insurance plans require a doctor's referral to reimburse your sessions, so check your plan if you're planning to use your insurance.

Does insurance cover Registered Psychotherapists in Brampton?

Yes, insurance plans in Ontario commonly cover Registered Psychotherapists. That said, coverage varies. Some plans name "registered psychotherapist" or "RP" specifically. Others use a broader category like "mental health practitioner" or "psychotherapy," which can include RPs without naming them. Check your plan for the exact wording before booking so you know what's reimbursed and what isn't. If you're unsure, contact your insurance provider directly and/or discuss it with your therapist during a free consultation.

Is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) the same as a Registered Psychotherapist (RP)?

Both Registered Social Workers (RSWs) and Registered Psychotherapists (RPS) can legally provide psychotherapy in Ontario. They just have different educational backgrounds and belong to different regulatory bodies.

How much does a Registered Psychotherapist cost in Brampton?

Expect roughly $100 to $220 per session, though the exact rate depends on the therapist's experience and specialty. Each therapist sets their own fee independently.

Every First Session profile lists the fee upfront, so there are no surprises once you're booked, and receipts are provided for insurance claims.
