What is a Registered Clinical Counsellor?
A Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) holds a designation from the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). BCACC requires a master's degree in clinical counselling, psychotherapy or a relevant area, plus at least 100 hours of clinical supervision, 25 of them direct.
BCACC says it holds RCCs accountable to standards for competent and ethical practice, and that it takes action when standards are not met.
A degree and a designation tell you what a counsellor studied. A short intro video shows how they speak and listen, and each First Session profile has one. This page also lists therapists from other provinces who are insured to provide online care in British Columbia.
What to know about Registered Clinical Counsellors in Richmond
Online and in-person
Richmond residents can book an RCC in an office or by video. Listed schedules are in Pacific time unless a profile says otherwise.
The second list above holds therapists from other provinces who are insured to provide online care in British Columbia.
Credentials in British Columbia
RCC is a designation from BCACC, a professional association. BCACC says regulation of the profession starts on November 29, 2027, and complaints then go to the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).
The BC Ministry of Health says the title Psychotherapist is set to be reserved for licensed practitioners from that date. CHCPBC has not yet set the eligibility standards.
Cost and insurance
GreenShield reports $140 to $225 per session for counsellors across Canada. Each First Session profile lists the fee before you book.
BCACC says an RCC may be covered by an extended health plan and advises contacting your insurer to confirm. In August 2026 it reported that 22 BC municipalities cover RCCs, up from 12 in 2023.
Language and local services
Vancouver Coastal Health's Richmond intake line, 604-204-1111, offers intake in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, plus free interpreting in other languages.
On this page you can filter by language to look for a counsellor who speaks yours.
How to choose a Registered Clinical Counsellor in Richmond
1Read the bio for focus areas
BCACC says RCCs hold at least a master's degree and many have added training in their area of practice. Look for training that matches your concern, such as a named therapy approach or a client group.
2Watch the intro video
Listen for pace, warmth and how the counsellor describes their way of working.
3Match the designation to your plan
Plans can name the titles they cover. Find the wording in your benefits booklet, then compare it with the designation on the profile and ask your insurer whether RCC is listed.
4Use the free consultation
Book the 15-minute call and ask how the counsellor works with your concern. Ask about session length, how often you would meet at the start, and whether evening or video appointments are offered.
