How does GreenShield cover therapy?

GreenShield says most plans cover therapy up to an annual maximum. Many reimburse a percentage or a fixed amount per session, which can leave part of each fee with you.

GreenShield also says psychologists are widely covered, while social workers and registered psychotherapists appear as separate categories on some newer plans.

First Session profiles show each therapist's designation, so you can compare it with the providers your plan lists before you book. The listings above include Victoria-based therapists and therapists from other provinces who are insured to provide online care in BC.

What to know about GreenShield coverage in Victoria

Online and in-person

Therapists from other provinces in the second listing are insured to provide online care to BC clients. They can see you by video from home in Greater Victoria.

Ask GreenShield whether your plan reimburses online sessions. GreenShield calls your benefits booklet or member portal "the fastest way to confirm" what you are entitled to.

Credentials in British Columbia

The College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC) regulates psychologists. It says psychotherapists will be regulated by CHCPBC on November 29, 2027.

The BC College of Social Workers regulates social workers. Registered Clinical Counsellors are credentialed by BCACC, whose members voluntarily commit to its code of conduct.

What your plan states

GreenShield suggests looking in the paramedical or mental health category of your plan. Check the provider types it lists, your annual maximum, your reimbursement rate with any per-visit cap, and whether a referral is required.

GreenShield says coverage depends on the insurer, plan sponsor, policy, contract and province.

Cost in Victoria

The BCACC 2026 Fee Guide lists three bands for RCCs per 50 minutes. They are $140 to $155 under three years after a master's degree, $155 to $175 at three to five years, and $175 to $225 for specialized services. RCCs may set their own rates.

The University of Victoria Psychology Clinic charges $125 per session, with a sliding scale for people who cannot pay the standard fee.

How to choose a therapist for your GreenShield plan in Victoria

1Read your plan first

Open your benefits booklet or the GreenShield member portal. Note which provider types are listed, your annual maximum, and your reimbursement rate. Then you can filter this page with the right designation in mind.

2Match the designation

Each profile shows the therapist's designation, such as psychologist, RCC or registered social worker. Compare it with the provider types your plan lists. GreenShield says psychologists are widely covered and other designations depend on the plan.

3Check the receipt details

GreenShield says a receipt should show the therapist's name and credentials, the date, the session length and the amount paid. First Session emails a receipt that lists the therapist's licence number and designation.

4Watch the intro video

A bio lists training, and a short video shows how a therapist speaks and what a conversation with them feels like. Watch two or three before you decide. Pick the person you would be comfortable returning to, then confirm the designation fits your plan.

5Use the free consultation

Use the profile to book a free 15-minute consultation. Ask the therapist to confirm their designation and how long their sessions run, since both appear on the receipt.

Helping Every Therapy Seeker Find the Right Fit

Compatibility is the most important factor when choosing a therapist. But finding the right fit isn’t easy. First Session takes the time, guesswork, and emotional labour out of that process.

  • Search a curated therapist network

Narrow your search to a list of rigorously vetted therapists you’ll actually consider booking. Because finding a therapist shouldn’t involve reading endless generic bios.

  • Assess for fit before you commit

Decide if a therapist is the right fit for you before booking with interview videos and in-depth bios. No more switching or re-telling your private feelings and story

  • Book directly (and instantly)

Schedule an available session or free consultation right from the First Session platform. No 3rd party intake calls or back and forth emailing required.

Free yourself from the stress of endless searching and switching

Convenience-first approach to finding a Greenshield

  • Burnout from endless search results and unhelpful Greenshield profiles.
  • Disappointment and frustration from generic intake calls and unproductive ‘free’ consultations.
  • Emotional stress from repeatedly revealing private thoughts and feelings to incompatible Greenshields

  • Risk of abandoning therapy process altogether because of frustration, exhaustion, or depression

  • Get to know a Greenshield’s personality, approach, and experience before booking
  • Share your private history, thoughts, and feelings only if there’s a connection
