Therapy is hard work.

Finding the right therapist shouldn’t be. Over 10,000 Canadians found their new therapist with First Session.

Frequently asked therapy questions

What do I talk about in a free consultation with a therapist?

It's more of an introductory meeting rather than an actual therapy session. You'll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, any goals you have, and get a feel for how the therapist works. It's also a chance for the therapist to assess how they can help you. This session is more about information gathering and less about diving deep into therapy.

Are there any specific questions I should prepare or ask during this free consultation?

Consider asking about their experience with issues similar to yours, their therapeutic approach, session frequency, and any logistical questions like session lengths and scheduling.

Some questions might include:

     - What is your experience with my specific issues or concerns?

     - What approach or techniques do you use in therapy?

     - What are your policies around scheduling, cancellations, and fees?

     - How do you measure progress in therapy?

How long does a free consultation typically last, and will it be online or over the phone?

Free consultations typically last 15 minutes, and will likely use the same platform as full sessions (online sessions = online consultation).

Can I schedule free consultations with more than one therapist to compare, or is that frowned upon?

It's common and acceptable to meet with a few therapists to find the best fit for you. Think of it as gathering information to make an informed decision about your mental health care.

How will I know if they are the right therapist for me?

Trust your instincts about how comfortable you feel with the therapist. It's important you feel heard, understood, and safe. If you're unsure, reflect on the consultation afterwards and consider if you'd feel comfortable sharing more with them.

What are the next steps if I want to start regular sessions?

If you feel a good connection with the therapist, discuss the next steps with them. This includes scheduling your first full session, understanding payment options, and any paperwork that might be needed to start your therapy journey together.

What are the different types of therapists in Ontario?

In Ontario, there are four regulated types of therapists: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and psychotherapists.

Psychiatrists have a medical degree and are able to both diagnose mental illnesses and disorders and prescribe medication.

Psychologists in Ontario are highly educated at a PhD level in the science of human behaviour and the mind (“psychology associates” will have a master’s degree). Psychologists can diagnose mental health conditions as well as provide psychotherapy.

Psychotherapists in Ontario are regulated by Ontario provincial law. You can expect to work with them on mental, behavioural, or emotional needs through verbal or non-verbal communication methods.

Social workers in Ontario hold either a bachelor’s degree (RSW) or master’s degree (MSW). Many social workers offer counselling services through private practice. In Ontario, Registered Social Workers can use the title psychotherapists in certain contexts.

Is therapy covered by OHIP? Can I use my work health benefits?

If you’re in Ontario, therapy covered by provincial healthcare (OHIP) consists of:

  • a visit to a psychiatrist via a doctor’s referral
  • a family doctor who also provides psychotherapy services
  • a therapist working in a hospital or another public health setting.

The provincial government does, however, have a resources page available with a number of affordable and accessible mental health care options.

Therapy coverage by workplace insurance benefits can significantly reduce the amount you pay out-of-pocket to see a therapist. Typically, you pay for your session and then submit it as a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement. Your insurance provider’s benefits booklet will tell you what kind of coverage you have, and how to file claims.
