How Blue Cross covers therapy in Toronto

Blue Cross plans list therapy coverage by practitioner type. Ontario Blue Cross's Complete Health Plan brochure lists psychologists, social workers, clinical counsellors and psychotherapists under one health practitioner benefit.

In that brochure, the benefit pays $55, $80 or $95 per visit, up to $250, $400 or $500 per calendar year, depending on the coverage level. Your own policy sets your actual amounts.

Because plans pay by practitioner type, the designation on a therapist's profile matters. Every First Session profile shows it, so you can match it to your plan before you book.

What to know about Blue Cross therapy in Toronto

Online and in-person

Medavie Blue Cross, which handles Blue Cross group coverage in Ontario, says that if your plan covers a practitioner type, you can claim virtual visits with that type. Its list includes psychologists, psychotherapists and social workers.

The therapist must be registered in Ontario to treat you. Out-of-province therapists on First Session are insured to provide online care to Ontario clients.

Credentials in Ontario

Each title has its own Ontario regulator. Registered Psychotherapists (RP) register with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), and only its registrants can use that title. RP (Qualifying) therapists practise with clinical supervision, according to CRPO.

Registered Social Workers (RSW) register with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, which authorizes them to perform psychotherapy. Psychologists register with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario and may use C.Psych.

Cost and insurance

Therapy Toronto, a self-referral service, puts average private psychotherapy in Toronto and the GTA at $150 to $300 per 45-minute session, based on its 2026 rates. OHIP generally does not cover psychotherapy unless a psychiatrist or a GP provides it.

Profiles list fees before you book. After each session, First Session emails a receipt showing the therapist's name, license number, designation, practice address, session date and amount paid.

Free therapy in Toronto

CAMH coordinates the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program for the Toronto region. It offers free, publicly funded, short-term cognitive-behavioural therapy to adults 18 and older with symptoms of depression or anxiety.

You can self-refer through the CAMH website. Sessions are individual or group, in person or virtual.

How to choose a Blue Cross therapist in Toronto

1Match the designation to your plan

Read your plan booklet and note which practitioner types it lists. Then filter the listings by that designation and narrow by the concern you want to work on.

2Compare your limit with the fee

In Ontario Blue Cross's brochure, the Entry level pays $55 per visit up to $250 a year. That covers four full visits and part of a fifth. Set your plan's figures beside the fee on the profile to see your cost per session.

3Watch the intro video

A yearly maximum makes each session count. The short video on a profile lets you hear how the therapist talks about your concern before you spend a visit on them.

4Ask about the receipt in the free consultation

Book the free 15-minute consultation from the profile. Ask for the title and registration number that appears on your receipt, then confirm that title is on your plan's list.

Helping Every Therapy Seeker Find the Right Fit

Compatibility is the most important factor when choosing a therapist. But finding the right fit isn’t easy. First Session takes the time, guesswork, and emotional labour out of that process.

  • Search a curated therapist network

Narrow your search to a list of rigorously vetted therapists you’ll actually consider booking. Because finding a therapist shouldn’t involve reading endless generic bios.

  • Assess for fit before you commit

Decide if a therapist is the right fit for you before booking with interview videos and in-depth bios. No more switching or re-telling your private feelings and story

  • Book directly (and instantly)

Schedule an available session or free consultation right from the First Session platform. No 3rd party intake calls or back and forth emailing required.

Free yourself from the stress of endless searching and switching

Convenience-first approach to finding a Blue Cross

  • Burnout from endless search results and unhelpful Blue Cross profiles.
  • Disappointment and frustration from generic intake calls and unproductive ‘free’ consultations.
  • Emotional stress from repeatedly revealing private thoughts and feelings to incompatible Blue Crosss

  • Risk of abandoning therapy process altogether because of frustration, exhaustion, or depression

  • Get to know a Blue Cross’s personality, approach, and experience before booking

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Blue Cross cover therapy in Toronto?

It can, and the amount depends on your plan. Ontario Blue Cross's Complete Health Plan brochure lists psychologists, social workers, clinical counsellors and psychotherapists, with yearly maximums of $250, $400 or $500.

The brochure also notes that a physician referral is required for certain health benefits. Read your policy for the referral rules that apply to you.

Every First Session profile shows the therapist's designation, so you can check it against your plan first.

Which therapist titles does Blue Cross accept in Ontario?

That depends on your plan. Ontario Blue Cross's brochure names psychologists, social workers, clinical counsellors and psychotherapists.

Medavie Blue Cross states that services must come from a Medavie Blue Cross-approved health professional to be eligible. Before booking, ask Blue Cross whether your plan accepts the exact title: RP, RP (Qualifying), RSW or psychologist.

What does RP (Qualifying) mean on a Toronto therapist's profile?

It is a registration category with CRPO. Registrants must practise psychotherapy with clinical supervision.

Blue Cross's published plan summary lists psychotherapists without naming that category, so ask your plan administrator whether RP (Qualifying) therapists are accepted.

Can I claim online therapy sessions with Blue Cross?

Yes, when your plan covers that practitioner type. Medavie Blue Cross lists psychologists, psychotherapists and social workers among the types whose virtual visits you can claim.

Confirm that the therapist is registered in Ontario. Out-of-province therapists on the online listings are insured to provide care to Ontario clients.

How do I submit a Blue Cross claim for therapy?

Pay for the session, then submit the receipt. First Session does not offer direct billing, and Medavie Blue Cross states that a receipt is always required.

Medavie recommends the Blue Cross Mobile app or the Member Services Site. If you mail a claim, include the paper claim form. Only the main cardholder can submit claims.

Is there free therapy in Toronto if I reach my Blue Cross maximum?

The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program offers free cognitive-behavioural therapy to adults 18 and older with symptoms of depression or anxiety. CAMH coordinates it for the Toronto region, and the CAMH website has a self-referral form.

OHIP generally does not cover psychotherapy from private practice therapists, so a yearly maximum can run out. Once it does, you pay the session fee yourself.

You deserve more from therapy.

You made the courageous decision to reach your full potential. Find the right therapist to help get you there, and make the most of the time and money you’re investing in yourself.
