Frequently asked therapy questions

Who is eligible to use First Session?

Any 1Password employee in Canada can use First Session to find a therapist. Sessions with our therapists can be claimed through your Sunlife paramedical coverage, and if your spouse or dependents are on your plan, they may be covered too.

How much coverage do 1Password employees get for therapy and counselling?

1Password offers two Sunlife plan options:

  • Standard plan: up to $1,500 a year for paramedical services
  • Enhanced plan: up to $2,500 a year, for a small additional monthly cost

At First Session's average session fee of about $165, that's roughly 9 sessions on the standard plan or 15 on the enhanced plan, if you use the full amount for therapy. This maximum may also cover other paramedical services, like massage therapy, so check your remaining balance in the my Sunlife app. If you expect to see a therapist regularly, the enhanced plan is worth considering at your next enrolment.

Which therapists and counsellors are covered?

Your Sunlife plan should cover sessions with the main types of licensed therapists on First Session:

  • Registered Psychotherapists (RP) and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying)
  • Registered Social Workers (RSW)
  • Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) and Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCC)
  • Psychologists

Plans can differ, so please confirm in your plan booklet in the my Sunlife app or with 1Password's benefits team before you book. Read more about Sunlife therapy coverage, or ask any therapist during a free initial consultation.

Should I use Dialogue or First Session?

It depends on what you need. For short-term immediate support, 1Password offers Dialogue, its employee assistance program (EAP), which 1Password pays for in full.

For longer-term therapy, 1Password recommends using your paramedical coverage, and that's where First Session fits. Sessions with our therapists are paid for through your Sunlife paramedical coverage, not through Dialogue.

How much does therapy cost?

Session fees on First Session range from $90 to $300, and the average is about $165. Most therapists charge between $135 and $190 for an individual session. Every therapist's fees are listed upfront (taxes included), so you can budget accordingly. You can also filter for therapists offering sliding scale rates.

Do I pay upfront, or does the therapist direct bill?

You pay the full session fee upfront by credit card when you book. After each session, you'll get an itemized receipt to submit to Sunlife, which takes a few minutes in the Sunlife app. With direct deposit set up, reimbursement usually arrives within a few business days.

Can I see a therapist in person, or only online?

Both. Every First Session therapist offers online sessions by video, so you can see someone from anywhere in Canada. About a third also see clients in person, so you can filter by city to find someone near you. For insurance purposes it usually doesn't matter whether a session is online or in person, as long as the therapist is covered.

Will 1Password know I'm seeing a therapist?

No. 1Password isn't notified when you book through First Session, and we don't share your booking details with 1Password. Your sessions are between you and your therapist, and your claims go directly to Sunlife.

Can someone help me choose a therapist?

Yes. Call or text our team at 778-486-0068, or send us a message, and we'll help you narrow it down. You don't have to talk to anyone to book, though: every therapist can be booked online.

What types of therapy are available through First Session?

Our therapists use a wide range of approaches. The most common are:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), offered by about two in three of our therapists
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Narrative therapy
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
  • Psychodynamic therapy

Newer approaches are growing fast too, including Internal Family Systems (IFS), which about a third of our therapists now offer, somatic therapy, EMDR for trauma, and polyvagal-informed therapy.

Not sure which is right for you? The fit with your therapist matters more than the method, so watch a few intro videos and book a free consultation.
