Finding a therapist in North York

North York is part of the City of Toronto, where the 2021 census found that 42.5% of residents had a mother tongue other than English or French. Mandarin (4.1%) and Yue, or Cantonese (3.7%), led the list, according to the City of Toronto's language backgrounder.

That range of languages shapes a search as much as a postal code does. Every First Session profile has a short intro video and a written bio, and the directory can be filtered by language, so you can hear how someone talks about their work before you book.

The listings above show two groups: therapists based and insured in Ontario, and out-of-province therapists insured to provide online care to Ontario clients.

What to know about therapy in North York

Online and in person

North York residents can meet a therapist in an office or by video, and the cards above show which format each therapist offers.

Online sessions open up every therapist insured to practise in Ontario, including those based in other provinces. That helps when you want a particular language, approach or designation.

Credentials in Ontario

Ontario protects the title Registered Psychotherapist for members of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). An RP (Qualifying) is still completing registration, practises with clinical supervision, and has up to five years to finish, according to CRPO.

Registered social workers may use the title psychotherapist, says the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Each First Session profile shows the designation.

Cost and insurance

GreenShield's 2026 cost guide gives private-pay ranges across Canada of $120 to $250 for a registered psychotherapist, $120 to $200 for a social worker and $200 to $400 for a psychologist, and says rates tend to be higher in large urban centres. Fees show on each First Session profile before you book.

In May 2025 the OCSWSSW wrote to insurers about denied psychotherapy claims from its registrants. Match the designation on a profile to your plan's wording before you book.

Free public options near North York

North York General Hospital's Adult Mental Health Outpatient Services, at 4001 Leslie Street, serves North York and area at no fee. A physician's referral form is required.

Ontario's Structured Psychotherapy Program offers free cognitive behavioural therapy to adults 18 and over with depression or anxiety-related concerns, and you can self-refer. CAMH runs the Toronto region.

How to choose a therapist in North York

1Read your plan before you read the profiles

Plans word their covered providers differently, so look for the exact titles yours lists, such as psychologist, social worker or registered psychotherapist. Then filter the directory by that designation, which appears on every profile.

2Choose the language you think in

Filter by language, then watch the intro videos on your shortlist. Notice whether you could describe a hard week comfortably in that therapist's voice.

3Ask about supervision for RP (Qualifying)

If a profile says RP (Qualifying), ask who supervises their work and how often they meet. CRPO requires qualifying registrants to practise with clinical supervision, so the question is routine.

4Match the approach to your concern

Read the bio for the approaches a therapist was trained in, such as CBT, EMDR or couples work. In the consultation, ask which concerns fill most of their caseload and what the first few sessions usually cover.

5Use the free consultation to settle the details

Book the free 15-minute consultation and ask about session length, the fee after taxes, and the cancellation window. Fit is the main thing the call tests.

Helping Every Therapy Seeker Find the Right Fit

Compatibility is the most important factor when choosing a therapist. But finding the right fit isn’t easy. First Session takes the time, guesswork, and emotional labour out of that process.

  • Search a curated therapist network

Narrow your search to a list of rigorously vetted therapists you’ll actually consider booking. Because finding a therapist shouldn’t involve reading endless generic bios.

  • Assess for fit before you commit

Decide if a therapist is the right fit for you before booking with interview videos and in-depth bios. No more switching or re-telling your private feelings and story

  • Book directly (and instantly)

Schedule an available session or free consultation right from the First Session platform. No 3rd party intake calls or back and forth emailing required.

Free yourself from the stress of endless searching and switching

Convenience-first approach to finding a therapist

  • Burnout from endless search results and unhelpful therapist profiles.
  • Disappointment and frustration from generic intake calls and unproductive ‘free’ consultations.
  • Emotional stress from repeatedly revealing private thoughts and feelings to incompatible therapists
  • Stalled mental health progress because of limited availability, timezone differences, or constantly switching providers
  • Risk of abandoning therapy process altogether because of frustration, exhaustion, or depression

Connection-first approach to finding a therapist with First Session

  • Instantly create a short-list of therapists qualified to support your journey
  • Get to know a therapist’s personality, approach, and experience before booking
  • Share your private history, thoughts, and feelings only if there’s a connection
  • Save time and minimize stress by finding the right fit without endless switching
  • Make meaningful progress sooner and commit to lasting, meaningful change

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there free therapy in North York?

Yes. North York General Hospital's Adult Mental Health Outpatient Services lists no fee, and it asks for a physician's referral form.

Ontario's Structured Psychotherapy Program is also free for adults with depression or anxiety-related concerns, and you can self-refer through the regional network.

Will my benefits reimburse a social worker or registered psychotherapist?

Often, if your plan covers mental health. GreenShield advises paying for the session and submitting a claim with an itemized receipt.

Wording is where claims get stuck. The OCSWSSW said in May 2025 that some insurers had denied psychotherapy claims from social workers, so check which designations your plan lists before booking.

What does RP (Qualifying) mean?

It is the title of a CRPO registrant who is still completing registration requirements. These registrants practise with clinical supervision and have up to five years to finish.

CRPO also requires at least 100 hours of clinical supervision tied to client contact hours, and the title has to be written out as Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) or RP (Qualifying).

Can a social worker provide psychotherapy in Ontario?

Yes. The OCSWSSW says its registrants are authorized to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy and do not need to register with CRPO.

They may use the title psychotherapist when they meet the conditions set in their governing legislation. The title Registered Psychotherapist is reserved for CRPO members.

Does online therapy work for North York residents?

Yes. Ontario's publicly funded structured psychotherapy program delivers CBT by phone, through internet modules and in person, so remote delivery is part of the program.

On First Session you can book a free 15-minute consultation with an Ontario-based or out-of-province therapist insured for Ontario, and see in that call whether video suits you.

How do I find a Mandarin or Cantonese speaking therapist in North York?

Use the language filter on the listings above. Mandarin and Cantonese are the two largest non-official mother tongues in Toronto, according to the City's 2021 census backgrounder.

Watch the intro video to hear the therapist, then use the free consultation to confirm they can work in the language you need.
