Frequently asked therapy questions

Who is eligible for the University of Toronto student health and dental plan?
How much coverage do University of Toronto students get for therapy and counselling?
  • UTSU Health & Dental Plan: Up to $100 per visit, with a maximum of 15 visits per policy year.
  • UTMSU Health & Dental Plan: Up to $125 per visit, with a maximum of 25 visits per policy year.
  • SCSU Health & Dental Plan: Up to $125 per visit, with a maximum of 20 visits per policy year.
  • UTGSU Health & Dental Plan: Up to 100% per visit, with a combined annual maximum of $750.

Coverage amount may change from year to year, so check your current plan documents or contact your insurance provider directly to confirm your coverage before booking.

What therapists and counsellors are covered for University of Toronto students?
  • UTSU Health & Dental Plan: Psychologists, Masters of Social Work (MSWs), Clinical Counsellors, and Licensed Psychotherapists.
  • UTMSU Health & Dental Plan: Covers appointments with a “mental health professional.” The plan does not appear to list specific professional designations on its public benefits page, so it’s best to confirm eligibility with GreenShield or the therapist before booking.
  • SCSU Health & Dental Plan: Psychologists, Counsellors, Masters of Social Work (MSWs), Social Workers, and Psychotherapists.
  • UTGSU Health & Dental Plan: Psychologists, Social Workers, Counsellors, and Psychotherapists.

Tip: If you’re unsure whether a specific therapist is covered, ask them during a free consultation. They can usually confirm whether their professional designation is eligible under your student insurance plan and help you understand how direct billing or reimbursement works.

Where can I find free or low-cost therapy as a UofT student?

UofT Health & Wellness offers free counselling to eligible students. For longer-term support or if you want a therapist with expertise in a specific mental health concern or therapy approach, you can also consider private therapy. Your student insurance may cover part of the cost, and some therapists offer sliding-scale rates based on your budget.

How much does therapy cost for University of Toronto students?

Private therapy in Toronto typically costs $125–$200 per session. First Session lists every therapist's session cost upfront (taxes included) so you can consider your budget first. You can also filter for therapists offering sliding scale rates if cost is a concern. If you have student insurance, you may also be able to use your coverage to offset some of the cost.

What mental health resources does the University of Toronto offer?

The University of Toronto offers a range of mental health resources to support student well-being. Health and Wellness Centres at St. George, UTM, and UTSC offer brief and same-day, single-session counselling with licensed therapists, as well as access to doctors and nurse practitioners who can assess, diagnose, and prescribe medication when appropriate.

Students can also access support groups, peer supporters, mental health workshops (e.g., coping skills, sleep, exam and test stress, imposterism, mindfulness), and training in suicide prevention and active listening.

What's the difference between counselling at the University of Toronto and private therapy?

Counselling at the University of Toronto's health centre is free for students and generally short-term. Wait times can fluctuate throughout the academic year, and students who need longer-term support may be referred to off-campus providers.

Private therapy typically involves paying for sessions out of pocket, although eligible fees may be partially or fully reimbursed through your student health insurance plan. It can provide ongoing support over a longer period and more choice in selecting a therapist whose specialty and approach match your needs.

Is online therapy available for University of Toronto students?

Yes, University of Toronto students can access online therapy. For insurance reimbursement, it usually doesn’t matter whether the session is online or in person, as long as the provider is covered. Still, check your policy before booking. Many therapists on First Session offer online sessions, which can make it easier to fit therapy around a busy student schedule.

Is First Session affiliated with the University of Toronto?

No. First Session is an independent company and is not affiliated with the University of Toronto. We created this page specifically to support U of T students and carefully researched all the information here. However, we encourage you to double-check details with your school if you're unsure. The therapists listed on First Session are carefully vetted licensed professionals, and their sessions are eligible for reimbursement through your student health insurance.
