Meet Mike

I feel most confident working with supervisees who…
  • Work with anxiety (and related disorders including OCD), addiction, or ADHD, or want to grow in these areas.

  • In addiction and alcohol use, I support supervisees across the full range of pathways, from abstinence to harm reduction, including 12-step programs, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, and other approaches, so they can meet clients where they are and work with ambivalence, relapse, and risk. With ADHD, I bring specialized training (ADHD-CCSP) and a practical focus on executive function, emotional regulation, and the shame that often comes with a late diagnosis.

  • I draw on ACT, CBT, MBCT, mindfulness, and Mindful Self-Compassion, and I'm glad to support therapists who work in these ways or are curious about them. These practices are as useful for steadying ourselves in the room as they are for our clients.

  • I also support therapists who work with caregivers, parents, and families, especially those whose loved ones live with severe mental illness or addiction. These clients often carry exhaustion, grief, and guilt, and I help supervisees offer care while holding clear boundaries, drawing on supports like Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, and SMART Recovery Family and Friends.

  • I'm an approved practicum supervisor for Yorkville University's Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) program, and a graduate of it myself. I know the program, its practicum requirements, and the road to CRPO registration well, and I enjoy supporting students through practicum and new RPs as they work toward independent practice.

I stay energized and engaged in my therapy practice by…
  • Maintaining an active private practice and tracking my own outcomes through FIT, so I'm practicing what I teach.

  • I keep learning through ongoing training, including in clinical supervision, and through my work with Starts With Me, including workplace workshops and the State of Mind Mental Health Podcast.

  • I've been in long-term recovery from addiction for more than 15 years. I maintain a regular meditation practice and facilitate mindfulness-based therapy groups.

My supervision approach and style can be described as…
  • I meet supervisees where they are. I'm not attached to any one model, and I'll help you build on how you already work.

  • Two things guide our work together.
    - The first is a question every therapist should keep asking: how do I know I'm helping? The research is consistent: years of experience alone don't make us more effective, and the type of degree or model we use matters less than most of us assume. What does help is regular client feedback, supported by deliberate practice, so we'll look at how your clients are actually responding and notice early when something isn't working.
    - The second is you. Our histories, fears, and blind spots show up in every session, and often the biggest obstacle in the room is us. Supervision is a place to look at that honestly and with curiosity.

  • I'm direct, collaborative, and practical, guided by courage, clarity, and compassion.
